Crucial traffic orders to improve safety around a new football ground for the Isle of Wight have been approved.
It will mean the speed limit on Fairlee Road, between Island Harbour and the Racecourse Roundabout and on Whippingham Road, on the approach to the roundabout, will be reduced from 50mph to 40mph.
The change was approved by Councillor Phil Jordan, the Isle of Wight Council’s cabinet member for infrastructure and highways, in a delegated decision made on Thursday.
The plan had earlier been met with mixed reactions – concerns were raised about whether drivers would stick to the new rules and if the designated entrance and exit points would trigger accidents.
However, one comment on the Isle of Wight Council’s website said the change would increase public safety and the drop in speed limit was praised.
The decision is subject to a call-in period.
The new football ground will be – all being well – the home of Newport FC.
While it waits for its new stadium, it has been based at Smallbrook Stadium and recently announced it would be returning to East Cowes Vics’ Beatrice Avenue, for the first time since 2021.
Isle of Wight Council members have until 25th May to raise issues about the decision and if it is unopposed it can be put into place after 26th May.

Given that a large number of drivers ignore speed limits anyway i doubt it will make much difference as it is only a couple of hundred yards anyway.
Reg have you found your pecker I heard it’s tiny
With the state of the road and not wanting any significant damage to your car , you can only go slow anyway
Just another excuse to lower another speed limit – the football ground will likely never be built but the bureaucrats have got all that matters to them
So in the event of the Football Stadium not being built in the future – it has been promised for many years with no action actually being taken – will the speed restriction be lifted to ease traffic congestion and pollution on a perfectly straight road with good unobstructed view on the main arterial route between two major towns on the Island ? No chance !
Despite the many constructive worthy comments made regarding this proposal – both on speed and access – this one person has made a “delegated” decision and references the one comment of support on their Council website and completely ignores all the other opposing comments.
Will NEVER be built..
Often stuck behind a dork on a bike who won’t use the cycle track.
Drop in speed will not make any difference.
Like who is gonna do 40 ..no one..
Will not matter, motorists will ignore the signs, unless traffic calming measures
or decent speed cameras are installed, it will be a joke.
Once told by a fantastic boss that you should never make rules you cannot or will not enforce.
Normally everyone’s stuck behind some Lycra wearing helmet lover riding right next to an actual cycle track!! So can barely get above 30 a long there now, gotta give them a full lane to overtake as they seem to have more rights than actual motorists these days.
Hmm? You should always overtake a car via full lane as well. Same thing.
Yeah well that’s obvious isn’t Sherlock, what I’m referring to is an adult riding a Children’s toy which would only be about half a meter wide, needing the whole lane if any one needs to overtake them, the rules are ridiculous!
Kev have you found ur pecker
Kev and his stupid comments again
Bloody John chatting crap again be quite John
Another daft decision made by a council that are proving, yet again, to be completely out of touch with the needs of the community & the people of the Isle of Wight!
