Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary almost 40 arrests here on the Island as part of Operation Holly, their annual Christmas drink and drug driving campaign. From 1st December to 31st December 2023, officers from the Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit carried out targeted activity to stop drivers under the influence of drink and drugs. Across the region, 302 arrests were made. 131 of these were for drink driving, 151 for drug driving and 15 for drink and drug driving. On the Isle of Wight, 39 arrests were made with 12 being for drink driving and 27 for drug driving. Detective Chief Inspector Mike Bettington, of the Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit, said:
“Operation Holly is carried out during the festive period every year and it’s disappointing to see that people are still getting behind the wheel when under the influence of drink and/or drugs. “We see too often the devastating consequences that can result from this behaviour and I am pleased that we have managed to make so many arrests and prevent the potential harm that can be caused by drink and drug drivers. “Our priority is to make the roads safer for everyone and we’d ask the public to help us do this by challenging anyone you think may be about to drive having drank alcohol or used drugs. “Even the smallest amount of alcohol or drugs can impact on your driving. It’s not worth the risk.”

No excuses
Anyone who drink drives or drives under the influence of drugs
Needs banging up!
Until we get tough with these morons it will never stop!
2nd time off to Rawanda
No excuse for drink drive but the lack of taxis available unless booked days before and the fact there’s a refusal to grant UBER a licence to work on the island adds to the problem!
Wow, they don’t allow Uber on the IOW? Then probably not Lyft either, huh? That needs to be fixed, as it’s a great solution for avoiding impaired driving!
just another day on the isle of wight
