Coastguards, firefighters and lifeboat crew members are working to rescue 2 women who have become trapped on the coast of the Isle of Wight near St Helens this afternoon (Saturday).
The casualties have found themselves stuck in what is fast becoming a notorious section of landslip at Nodes Point.
Several rescues have taken place in the same location over the past 2 years, meaning emergency services are well rehearsed in exactly how to bring the casualties to safety.
Bembridge and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Teams, Bembridge RNLI and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are all in attendance at The Duver, working along the stretch of coastline towards Priory Bay.
The alarm was raised – thought to be via mobile phone – shortly before 15:30.
Emergency personnel are being transferred by lifeboat from the beach to the scene of the ongoing rescue, equipped with specialist mud rescue equipment.
Bembridge RNLI has launched both its inshore and All Weather lifeboats, as well as the Y-boat, with the fire service mobilising appliances from Ryde and Newport.
The incident comes on one of the first Spring-like days of the year with much warmer temperatures and sunny conditions enticing walkers out to the coast and into the countryside.
UPDATE @ 16:50 – As the light begins to fade more than 25 responders are continuing to work together to rescue the 2 stuck individuals, who appear to have climbed a steep section of landslip amid an incoming tide.
Responding to the incident are; Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team, Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team, Bembridge RNLI All Weather Lifeboat (and Y-boat), Bembridge RNLI inshore lifeboat, 1 wholetime fire appliance from Ryde, 1 wholetime fire appliance from Newport, Response Support Vehicle from Newport, a duty fire officer, 2 ambulances and an ambulance operational commander.
UPDATE @ 17:10 – Both casualties are now safely back on firm ground having been successfully rescued from their predicament.
In the last few minutes the duo have been taken from the landslip around to The Duver by lifeboat, and transferred ashore.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has dispatched 2 ambulances and an operational commander to the scene to check over the older female causalities, who appear to have escaped injury.
Although the immediate rescue is now over, work continues to retrieve equipment and personnel back to The Duver utilising Bembridge RNLI 3 lifeboats.
