2 sheep have died and another has suffered serious wounds following a dog attack in Norton Green, which has led to Police issuing an appeal for information.
The incident took place sometime between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning near to Golden Hill.
It was around 09:00 last Saturday that the owner found the 3 bloodied sheep in their field, 1 of which had already died. The other 2 were taken to a local vet but the decision was taken to put 1 of the pair to sleep as nothing more could be done to save the animal.
It’s thought that the offending dog may have been covered in blood, so its owner should be aware that something had happened.
If a dog worries livestock on any agricultural land, the owner of the dog, and, if it is in the charge of a person other than its owner, that person also shall be guilty of an offence under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953. It’s not just sheep to which the law applies… cattle, goats, swine, horses and domestic poultry are also covered by the law.
A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“We received a report on Saturday that at around 9am that morning, three sheep had been found with injuries.
“One of the sheep had died and the other two were taken to the vets with injuries.
“A second sheep was subsequently euthanised by the vets.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Police on 101, quoting 44220489729.

The farmer has the legal right to shoot any dog on his land worrying livestock, i wouldn’t be surprised if the owner of the dog / dogs happily stood by and watched the sheep being attacked.
Many now would video it on their benefits paid for latest phone to share with their chav mates and the gullible on here will still be donating food and prezzies to their widely scattered clones.
Dog owners are full of self entitlement and arrogance, I’m sick and bloody tired of them ignoring the public footpath and using my driveway instead, dogs off leads roam my property and foul it.
If you dare to challenge the owners you get verbal abuse, or lame excuses, the best one being, oh but the footpath is muddy! (Winter time, middle of the countryside)
So this sad report does not surprise me in the slightest.
I hope the owner is found and prosecuted, oh and hopefully the dog is destroyed too.
Does your lack of ability to see further than your own nose lead you to make such a totally generalized comment.
The vast majority are pretty responsible people as far as I observe.
A few instances that you have experienced, on your own property, does not illustrate the whole picture.
What’s up kev, your dog got a taste for shepherds pie on the hoof?
Seems then all the bad ones must congregate in our area because there are certainly loads of them.
That is a stupid thing to say. No one in their right mind would stand idly by whilst their dog attacks sheep.
Bo. Have you not been reading the local media for the past 20 plus years? There has been countless accounts of precisely that happening on farm land all over the Island. So “Old School” comment obviously isn’t as stupid as you claim!
Have to say that there seems to be poor levels of control nowadays. Not just letting them off the lead when they are the sort of dog likely to frighten or attack people or animals, but generally bad management. I see/pass fifty dogs and owners a day and the most common problem seems to be lack of obedience. The owners haul away at the leads with a constant drone of ineffective requests to ‘behave.’ Or just let them do as they wish. The other day saw a very menacing monster mastiff off the lead under the ‘control’ of an adolescent girl with a couple of toddlers in tow. I’ve and dogs all my long life and there have always bad owners and bad parents. You just expect better in our enlightened times.
Seen dogs chasing the sheep in the field near Bouldnor. Dogs not actually in the same field but the field next door. Dog owners at other end of field doing nothing to stop their dogs chasing up and down making the sheep run in a panic. As always the few irresponsible dog owners get the majority of good dog owners a bad name.
This is terrible. But nobody saw dogs with the sheep. It happened between late afternoon & early morning. Has the farmer not thought of a fox? When they’re hungry & feeding pups, they will get food wherever they can.
From what I read the sheep were just killed. This usually means they are wounded in the rear or the throat, but had they been killed for food I would suspect that the body would have been eviscerated. Seems like another case of dog owners not taking control of their potentially killer dogs.
Give a fox a bad name, then. Feeding pups in Decenber? You are more likely to see snow in July.
Wakey, Wakey.. A fox isn’t a wolf! And they certainly don’t have cubs this time of year.
Sounds more like a pair of dogs attacking some beloved sheep, while their irresponsible owner looked the other way.
My heart goes out to the owner of the sheep.
Idiots should keep their animals on a lead.
All dogs should be microchipped and their DNA held on a database that way they can be traced after attacks like this, any not chipped and on database should be put down, it wouls also allow dog fouling to be dealt with.
Great idea, as it’s not just other animals they attack. Too many little kids chewed up by status ‘dags’.
You cant go for a walk down the beach without some lolloping great mutt jumping up at you with muddy feet and bared teeth, but of course ‘hes only playing’ time to toughen up the rules.
The usual excuse, “They only wanted to play with them”.
No excuses here – the dog owner should be found and prosecuted, if appropriate. However, the eventual fate of these gentle animals at the hands of a slaughterer is no less horrific. If you’re disgusted by this attack, perhaps think about removing meat from your diet. Anything else is probably cognitive dissonance.
