A large crowd turned up at Newclose Beer Festival to watch Newport’s 1st Team beat a depleted Northwood Cricket Club IOW by 146 runs.
Stu Gurney returned to the Newport 1st team to top score with 74 runs, ably supported by further half-centuries from Ad C Wilson and Tom Robin, to post a big total of 264 from their 40 overs.
Northwood started solidly in reply with Callum Witham top scoring with 32 but – after Ash Brett eventually had him caught behind – wickets fell steadily throughout the innings as the away side were bowled out for 118 in 36 overs.
Andy Ball – another player back in the 1st team after an absence – bowled superbly with figures of 3-17. Wickets were shared around amongst the other bowlers – skipper Gareth Bricknell taking his season’s tally to 16 wickets after claiming 2 more scalps, and there were also 2 wickets for Ash Brett and 1 apiece for Adam Wilson, Connal Howells and Aaron Hartup.

Newport remain top of Division 1 with 4 wins from 4 games.
Newport 2nds also had a very successful day away to Ryde 3rds to take their 1st win of the season.
Batting 1st, the Newport team totalled 168-7 from their 35 overs with Steven Steinmetz claiming his first half-century for the club with 62 not out.
The Newport opening attack of Max Poynter and Anthony Rajan then reduced the Ryde batsman to 2-5 in the early stages of their innings. Ryde recovered somewhat but were eventually rolled for 60 from just over 20 overs.
Max Poynter ended with figures of 5-11. this was very impressive from the youngster, who has had some 1st team exposure this year, and – with that display – could be in for some more. The other wickets were shared between Anthony, Manu, Olly Pease and Drew Oxlade. The remaining wicket was a runout.
Ryde 3rds 60 all out Newport 168/7 Newport won by 168 runs

Shanklin & Godshill 2nds beat Ventnor 3rds at Arreton by 6 wickets with an over and 4 balls to spare to record their 1st win of the season.
Ventnor won the toss and elected to bat, reaching a formidable total of 247/2 in their 40 overs with Mark Price scoring an unbeaten 115 and Adam Goulding failing to reach his century by a mere 5 runs, making an unbeaten 95 runs off 84 balls.
Shanklin’s batsmen were equal to the task set with opener Steve Priddle hitting 80 and Cobb scoring 37. Wicket-keeper Billington (56) and Nathan Moore (28) saw Shanklin home with 10 balls remaining.
