A man has sadly died following a road traffic collision on Station Road in St Helens last night (Monday).
Emergency services, including the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, were called to Station Road at around 20:00 when a Hyundai i10 crashed into an electricity pole.
The elderly man was swiftly extricated from the vehicle by firefighters and rushed to St Mary’s Hospital under Police escort. Despite the best efforts of paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, he did not survive.
It is thought a medical episode may have led to the collision taking place. but investigations are ongoing.
Station Road was placed under a hard road closure last night but has since re-opened following examination of the scene by the mainland-based Collision Investigation Unit.
