Young people from across the Isle of Wight have taken centre stage at a vibrant, sustainable fashion show in Ryde, transforming recycled materials into bold and imaginative designs.
New Carnival hosted its second ‘Trash to Trend’ Sustainable Fashion Show on Saturday (18th April) at Network Ryde’s hub inside the former St Thomas Church.
A total of 28 young people designed, created and modelled their own environmentally responsible outfits, showcasing creativity alongside a strong message around sustainability.
Participants came from Isle of Wight College, The Island Free School, Network Ryde, Haylands Farm and New Carnival’s youth group ‘New Creative’.
This year’s theme, ‘A Song That Resonates’, brought energy to the runway as models performed to music reflecting their personal stories and inspirations.
The project, funded by Arts Council England, ensured the event was free and inclusive. Young people were supported with materials, workshops and mentoring from New Carnival artists.
The day began with team-building activities before participants prepared for the show with rehearsals, face painting and interviews with host Quivers.

Quivers, Host, has said:
“The young people astounded me yet again; seeing their designs and chatting about their backstories and inspiration was in-turn incredibly inspiring to me.
“Watching some very shy people step up on the stage previously feeling anxious and worried, then insisting on multiple walks up and down the runway was a true joy.”
Friends, family and supporters filled the venue, alongside a panel of judges from creative and community backgrounds.
Awards were presented for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, as well as categories including Sustainable Choice, Emerging Talent and a Peer Award voted for by participants. Winners received cash prizes, certificates and handmade recycled rosettes.
Louise Lea, Judge, has said:
“I was genuinely blown away by the creativity on display. Every outfit showed incredible resourcefulness, imagination and attention to detail, turning everyday waste into something truly special.
“It made judging a real challenge, and the panel found it incredibly difficult to choose a winner – which is a testament to the talent we saw on the runway. I came away completely inspired.”
Organisers have thanked all those involved, including participants, families, tutors, volunteers and local supporters who contributed to the event.
A tutor from Isle of Wight College has said:
“The confidence and self-esteem boost this event creates is unmeasurable! It is collaborative, fun, creative inclusive and welcoming. We hope it continues to grow and grow.”
The ‘Trash to Trend’ show continues to provide a platform for young people to build confidence, express themselves and promote sustainable fashion on the Isle of Wight.
