VIDEO: “YOU WILL NOT SPEAK”! COUNCIL LEADER ‘LOST HIS RAG’ IN CABINET MEETING

James Rann - Digital News ReporterbyJames Rann - Digital News Reporter

AngryjordanThe Empowering Islanders group has criticised the conduct of the Council Leader during last week’s Cabinet meeting, during which a councillor was rudely prevented from asking challenging questions. Councillor Peter Spink – who represents Yarmouth and Freshwater North – asked whether high-quality agricultural land would be excluded from allocated sites in the proposed Island Planning Strategy. However, the simple question did not get a simple response, with the Empowering Islanders group stating that the answer contained ‘frequently used waffle’ on policy and considerations. Cllr Spink sought to bring the response back to the question asked, whereupon the Leader of the Isle of Wight Council, Councillor Phil Jordan, ‘lost his rag’ and repeatedly tried to prevent Cllr Spink from speaking. Then, Cllr Jordan ‘angrily and repeatedly’ ordered Cllr Spink to leave the meeting, standing and shouting at the same time whilst pointing his finger. Cllr Spink refused to leave before Cllr Jordan attempted to summon security officers to forcibly remove the Yarmouth and Freshwater North representative. A vote was then held that agreed Cllr Spink would ‘no longer be heard’, preventing him from speaking further and asking his remaining, challenging questions. A spokesperson for Empowering Islanders has said:

“There are those who presume to take undue advantage of their position but thankfully there are those who can correct them and others that are prepared to call them out. Cllr Spink, although silenced, remained for the entirety of the meeting as is his right, frustrating to Cllr Jordan’s frightening tantrum and angry declarations. “Disappointingly therefore, Cllr Spink’s important question was never answered in the meeting and a written response is now awaited”.

No they ain’t as not imprisonable offences and spent once fine paid, like saying parents who take kids on holiday or outstaying parking etc ,but Jordan is and clearly from video is not fit to hold seat and security should of removed him and drug/alcohol tested. But look at Trump – one dangerous man!.

Good to see the right to free speech and the right to representation is not only repressed by central government, but also local authorities. Clownceller Jordan, that well known law abiding pillar of our community, showing exactly why he’s not fit to lead!

I’m talking about the fact that the question had been answered to the best of the answerers ability, the rest of the answer would be put in writing once the details had been perused. Jordan had asked if the answerer could do that, he’d said yes and the Chair had given a ruling. Once that has happened, he asked if there was a second question and the Ind/Tory (who is often divisive) went back to the first. After a show of hands of the others there, a decision was taken to discount any further input or remove him. The Chair’s say is final, in ALL committees. What part of that do you not understand? Moreover, why should I be concerned with the agreement or not of some people who don’t know their arse from their elbows?

His attitude was about not holding his emotions in check. His reasoning though was sound, as was his conclusion. My ‘attitude’ is just a different opinion, my emotional reaction is completely in check and my conclusion is also sound. Talking over people who are busy giving an answer in order to create a fuss though….a wholly different scenario and why they voted to strike his further comments and ignore him. Just because he didn’t shout while talking over and interrupting Jordan doesn’t make him any more right than Jordan who did shout. HOWEVER, them’s the rules of engagement…the judges decision is final in such cases.

The question is of the utmost importance and needs answering. If high quality agricultural land is not protected from development, we might as well give up and hand the island over to these scumbag developers. Seeley got an amendment to the planning requirements that should have led to changes in the island development plan but these clowns on the council just ignored it. There is no need for all of these houses on the island based on an irrelevant quota system because we have a contracting population whereas parts of the mainland have a rapidly expanding population. This is all about back handers from developers. Pigs with their noses deep in the trough.

you are a control freak though karen – it comes across fully in your messages on this site – you insist on attempting to control the narrative by laying out a perception that you are looking down on everyone, from the moral high ground. You really do need to realise that trying to steer the conversation into your narrow opinion corridor will only result in you being in an echo chamber – and that stifles the valid views and expressions of others.

jordan shut the conversation down because he found it too difficult to answer and as such, showed his weakness by standing up,pointing and shouting.

At last Jerk Jordan shows his true colours on a live feed, at approx 11 minutes, wow what a nasty piece of work he is. There is no way he or any of this lot should be entrusted with our money or running the island. Jordans power was diminished in this meeting as he never got the councillor removed did he.

The jumped up little shite has lost the plot. Obviously, that is no way for a leader of the council to behave. You can see the pent up anger in him with the repeated leg movements and then he explodes. He has clearly got away with bullying for far too long and needs to go. Send him on his way with a crate of booze.

The behaviour of the playground. These are elected representatives but some seem to behave as if they are there by divine right! Such conduct brings the Council into disrepute and the Leader should apologise to the public on his individual and their several behalf. As voters and taxpayers we deserve better.

Utter bunch of clowns, the lot of them. How can people vote these idiots into office to run the island? Fresh blood is desperately needed to run an effective and useful council, preferably of no political persuasion whatsoever.

Very poor behaviour, this lot running our Island? cant even tolerate an opposing view or to questioned. I wonder if they have actually seen themselves and how they appear to the general public. Maybe they just don’t care??

it concerns me that Clir Jordan is an tyrannically bully boy … and a child… what should concern us all is this is our council cabinet … I wouldn’t trust these self serving individuals to run a car boot sale let alone our island ….there is a tiny minority here that want to do the right thing and ask the correct questions … and seek validity in the answers given …. But being silenced and threaten with explosion is typical of a corrupt regime where facts and disclosures are hidden from the public eye … personally I would love to see all there personal and business finances audited as the finding maybe very surprising …..

Is concerns me a great deal as well, but unlike much of the country we have no council elections this year (cheaper that way, everybody wants democracy on the cheap and this is the result) so we are stuck with this oaf for another year. And then the good people of Ryde North West will probably vote him back in again. It’s hard to be optimistic about the future.

commie dictator jordan is finished – perhaps he should arrange his leaving drinks party and a taxi home – close the door on the way out jordan, you are done – we, the islanders have lost trust and faith in your ability to remain impartial and ensure that all opinions are heard and answered.

Agree entirely, but how do we get rid of him ? Reality is most people are not interested in local politics (unfortunately politics is interested in them !) they often vote on name recognition, which is why we will almost certainly have the same people who have failed the people of the IOW for the past decade taking their seats again after next years council elections. What is it they same about doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome ?

This is exactly what the “Save Westridge Farm” campaign is all about, the bullying undemocratic and lying behaviour. Just a pity more people don’t get behind it, never has there been a better chance to publicly show up this Council, and their buddy Councillors.

Your Dad was right. Deliberately argumentative after being given a perfectly good response given the parameters of time constraints in that instance was also not a good look though. It denotes sly, manipulative and not conducive to collaborative workings but a self-serving agenda only.

Apart from the behaviour may I suggest your writers check the origin of the phrase “lost his rag” not nice and should not be written in reporting

Sorry’ but you might have to educate us thickies. “Rag” was Georgian slang for money/bank notes. There’s an obscure Scottish slang word, “Radge” which apparently means a person who is often crazy or angry. That might fit !

Maybe do your research first Paul.

In the phrase ‘lose your rag’, rag is most likely an old slang term for the tongue developed from the original sense of rag and from the 18th century verb to rag meaning to scold, which is also the source of the student rag or prank from the early 19th century, and the alternative verb meaning ‘to tease or play a joke on’.

Watching the video clip – and I have to say I know nothing about Council procedures etc – these two seem as bad as each other.

One wouldn’t shut up, and the other got on his high-horse telling him to shut up.

It was a bit like watching two overgrown children having an argument.

I have no idea what parties, if any, they represent and have got no other interest in it, so I’ve got no axe to grind, but they both need to act more responsibly in public office.

It definitely seems like there’s something happened between them previously, and this is a bit of ‘afters’.

But, my god, how boring are these meetings!
