Yarmouth RNLI was tasked to assist a yacht with engine failure in the vicinity of Colwell Bay this afternoon (Saturday).

Using the relief Severn Class all weather lifeboat (ALB), RNLB Margaret Joan and Fred Nye, the crew – including new member Alex Stewart – headed west out of Yarmouth Harbour after their pagers went at 15:11.

The RNLI volunteer crew located the 36ft yacht with 4 persons on board which was unable to make way under sail in the light winds against the strong tide. In danger of being swept through the Hurst narrows, the yacht with engine failure was temporarily being assisted by a passing boat.

Once on scene, Yarmouth RNLI assessed the situation and the Coxswain made the decision that undertaking an alongside tow was the safest way to assist the casualty, transferring the yacht to the safety of Yarmouth Harbour.

Yarmouth lifeboat returned to her berth and was ready for service at 16:20.
