A teenage girl stuck in the mud on the banks of the River Medina has been freed by fire crews this afternoon (Thursday).
Firefighters have used specialist rescue equipment to release the casualty, who was stuck fast in mud to above her knees on the western side of the river near Medham – just off the Cowes to Newport cycle path.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that crews were called to Medham Farm Lane in Northwood at 12:50.
A number of appliances from Newport, including the water rescue unit and the rescue tender, were mobilised after receiving reports of a female casualty trapped in mud.
Equipment such as floating platforms and rescue techniques to relax the suction around the casualty have been utilised. As a result, the casualty has been able to walk away from her ordeal.
She has been left in the care of paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
HM Coastguard also responded to the incident, which has now been brought to a close.
