1e45d697-8502-4fcd-8a0e-ed9f38e1aba5Detectives have launched an investigation into a stabbing in Newport Town Centre last night (Thursday), which saw a woman in her 20s receive a cut to her arm and an 18-year-old girl punched and kicked.

As first reported by Island Echo, Police responded to Church Litten park at around 20:30 following reports of an altercation involving a group of people.

A crime scene cordon wasn’t erected immediately but overnight a scene was established around the gym equipment area of the park to the rear of Lord Louis Library.

It has now been confirmed that an 18-year-old woman was punched and kicked during the assault, with a woman in her 20s – thought to be from Ryde – receiving a cut to her arm, caused by a small knife.

Police say that enquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances of last night’s incident, but early indications suggest that the altercation may have be triggered by transphobic slurs.

It’s said that all parties involved are known to one another.

Officers remain in attendance this lunchtime.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police on 101, quoting 44220407277.

Closing down the CCTV monitoring by Island Roads and IWCC was one of the worst things to happen.

CCTV is controversial, but in high incident areas like Church Litten park it is a huge deterrent to anti social behaviour.
A bit like knowing there are no fixed speed cameras on the island. People will speed, only slowing when the mobile camera is out and about.

CCTV monitoring can be money well spent.
Sadly, we can thank Jasmine Consulting and Jay Jayasundara for axing a vital resource in the highways budget cuts.

Seeing Island Roads work around the island, it’s easy to understand where the actual savings should have been made.
WHO’s seem them parked up watching YouTube whilst road closure is under lights?

Well if they are known by one another they can throw the book at the one with the knife, and the one who decided to use his feet and fists. Case solved doesn’t even need to wait for an outcome – just lock them up and throw away the key.

Any scum using a knife like this should be automatically jailed for at least 10 years with no possibility of parole no matter what their age.

There are bad islanders just like there are bad mainlanders. Just because it was islanders in this case. Doesn’t mean it is islanders in every case. Thinking like that is just stupid.

It was a hate crime. The girl is trans and was attacked because of this.

Please keep your opinions to yourself until you know the facts.

You honestly think that name-calling is as bad as using a knife on someone? Sorry, but that’s simply nonsense. No, it’s not nice being called names, no-one likes it, but it’s vastly different to having a knife used on you.

I’m not saying that name-calling is in anyway right. It’s immature and childish and can be hurtful but it’s a world away from having a knife thrust at you.

It was a trans woman and her partner who where were attacked.

Far right scumbags like you can’t choose decide which of your hate-figures to blame (LGBTQ or “feral youths”) so you blame them both.

Pathetic.

Male and female act very similarly nowadays, females more often louder and generally provoking trouble, males carrying out more violent assaults. This has changed ask any fellow door steward who has worked doors for a long time. Today 50/50 male female, 90s 80 to 90 pc male and before that probably females even less though I cant comment for sure as to young to be working. This means equal amount of scum males and females hence my correlation. Hope that helps

Going from this comment you have made. Makes me think that you are as scummy as the people you are referring too. You even say that you are scum yourself as you said ” Sounds like a scum on scum attack……. after recently experiencing it first hand “. So basically, what you are saying there is that you are scum and you were attacked by scum. I don’t usually condone violence. I’ll make an exception in your case though as it was just scum on scum.

Experiencing it first hand, it doesn’t mean I was the victim Mike or Michelle which ever you prefer merely an unfortunate bus passenger witnessing it. Its snowflake woke people like you and smiffy who are the ones playing into the hands of the far right. France, Italy, Sweden, Germany etc are all seeing it and it is because the majority will only put up with your fairy tale world so long, So you keep thinking your way I shall continue my way.

Any readers out there who run an evening and/or nighttime business in Newport or Ryde snd wonder why the footfall in those towns has rapidly declined, thus affecting your business turnover?
Well, when there is a preponderance of feral rats roaming the streets and parks, just like the delinquents described above, then do not expect your businesses to ever thrive.
Time for Councillor Julie Jones-Evans to DEMAND olive foot patrols in these towns.

I think you’ll find that delightful photo-op lady is too busy praising the Branstone Housing fiasco to worry about Church Litten and knife crime. But then on that issue it’s taxpayer working people losing their mortgages, not freeloading chavs.

It is United Nations suburb of Portsmouth and Southampton !!

Should have kept Isle of with , Just the Isle of Wight, not part of Hampshire. Many things would have been better. I do not remember a public vote as to whether we should have joined Hampshire ???

There are plenty of cameras in Newport, just no one to man them after a ‘review’ of Island Roads funding.. lives don’t matter when money is involved! Trouble is that the money spent on the ‘review’ would have paid to man the cameras 24/7 for a year or 3.

Actually I blame the council for allowing these types of people to be brought here to our Island. Seems the council move troublesome types from mainland over to here… to fill up the empty council places… instead of giving Islanders in need first choice.. !! If born here or lived here over ten years then should be first on the lists.. plus then leave the property vacant for minimum of 6 months before giving to one from mainland or elsewhere.

They were all Islanders.

The attackers were from the usual well known families.

Sorry, but this all goes back to Lord Ross of Pyle and his get pregnant get a house scheme. Before that people only moved to the Island if they had the money to buy a house.

Behave mate, the island has always had this trouble as had any town around the country. They are islanders board and bread. Only takes a few to make it seem really bad. The real issue is the Tories removing all the police.

Islanders born and bred. Yes, I totally agree with you regarding the Tories making 20,000 Police officers redundant. What a stupid move. Mrs Theresa May was responsible for that when she was Prime Minister. Kids nowadays grow up with PlayStation and Xbox games which are violent, bloody and graphic. People wonder why kids these days are so violent and uncaring. Just look at what has distorted their young minds! What is also sad, their parents don’t even know what the content is in these games, perhaps if they knew, they wouldn’t buy them and let their kids play these so called games.

I can remember stabbings taking place on the island 40+ years ago. This is nothing new. There are good humans, indifferent humans and a small minority of bad humans.

A cut arm ? That’s not a stabbing then. Known to each other ! ,don’t assume the person with knife was the attacker, might well of been used self defence, says small knife so could be under 2″ and legally in possession of. Does not make it ok but we are all making assumptions with out full facts.
If 3 guy’s attack me in my own home, I’ll be sure to find something (maybe a knife) or golf club to defend my self and family.
