Off the back of their dominant win at Goodwood in February, Richard Weaver and co-driver James Pink will be taking to the rally stages once again this weekend.
The Wight Rally Sport duo are entered in the Corbeau Seats Rally based at the seaside resort of Clacton in Essex, which will play host to Chelmsford Motor Clubs’s second running of their closed road special stage rally.
Drivers will tackle 12 special stages at flat out speeds with a total of 130 competitors entered in the event.
The route is based on the countryside roads in the Clacton and Tendring area and follows on from 2018’s inaugural running of this event, which ran under the newly passed government legislation that allows racing on closed public roads in England & Wales. Formerly, an individual act of parliament for each rally was required to suspend the road traffic act to allow this type of racing, but now local authorities may work with motor clubs to do so at local level.
With a strong national entry, Richard and James will start at position 20 (of 130) on the road, with drivers seeded by the organisers in order of their anticipated finishing position.
“I have competed quite a bit in Belgium on closed roads, where they have been holding closed public road rallies for years. My father competed there also in the 1970’s/80’s so we have friends there. We’re very excited to finally get the opportunity to now race in the same way on UK soil.”
With backing from regular sponsors JW Autoshine Car Valeting in Rookley; Sign Shop in Bembridge; Arch’s Speed Shop Car Restoration in Bembridge and now Go Internet, Isle of Wight Broadband and Telecom provider, Wight Rally Sport are keenly prepared and hoping for a strong showing this weekend.
Trevor Cook, Managing Director of Go Internet said:
“We’re undergoing a rebrand and were looking for an opportunity to get behind an Island sports team and we’re very happy to be involved with Wight Rally Sport and their fantastic rally car”.
“To have backing from so many Island companies is wonderful. They believe in us and we believe in their businesses. It’s nice to be able to grow together. We can’t thank them enough.”
