Forecasters have issued a warning about a small but rather strong area of low pressure that will run across the South on Friday, bringing a spell of very strong winds.
IW Met Service say that Southerly winds of 35-45mph will be seen across the Isle of Wight early on Friday morning, but by mid-morning the winds will turn Southwesterly and increase, with gusts of 40-50mph widely and as high as 65mph in more exposed parts of the West and South.
Wind blown debris such as leaves, twigs and small branches are very likely, with the possibility of larger branches and perhaps even downed trees.
Large waves in Southern and Western parts of the Island will be hazardous to beach users and small watercraft.
Meanwhile, strong offshore winds will affect Eastern and Northern parts of the Island leading to the risk of unpowered watercraft being blown off shore.
There is also a risk of damage or loss of garden furniture and cross-Solent travel may be disrupted.
Friday’s morning is in force from 03:00 until 16:00 and comes just days after torrential downpours led to flash flooding locally.
Jamie Russell, Chief Forecaster at IW Met Service, says:
”We are not currently expecting any coastal flooding or significant overtopping of sea defences, however we may see some minor overtopping at high tide or an hour or so either side at: Totland Bay, Freshwater Bay, Steephill Cove, Ventnor, the Shanklin to Sandown revetment and also Whitecliff Bay”.
