All electors who vote in a polling station will now be required to show photographic identification before a ballot paper can be issued to them.
The Isle of Wight Council does not have any planned elections this May, but, nonetheless, residents are being urged to make sure they are ready to vote in any future elections and by-elections – including town and parish council elections – by checking they have an accepted form of photographic ID.
Accepted forms of ID include a UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Commonwealth passport, a UK or EEA drivers’ licence or some concessionary travel passes, such as an older person’s bus pass or an Oyster 60+ card. Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo.
Anyone who does not have one of the accepted forms of ID will be able to apply for free ID online at www.voter-authority-certificate.service.gov.uk/ or by completing a paper form.
Claire Shand, the council’s Returning Officer, said:
“Even though we have no planned elections on 4 May 2023, it is important that those who want to vote in future elections and by-elections make sure they have an accepted form of ID. It may seem early but checking now means you will be ready to vote at any future polls.
“Residents who do not have one of the accepted forms of ID can apply for free ID either online or by completing a paper application form and sending this to the Isle of Wight Council’s electoral services team.
Anyone who wants to have their say in elections must also be registered to vote. It takes around 5 minutes to register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
So less people will vote, one way for Conservative to get back in power,as many working class don’t have passports (13%)or driving licence (25%)

My German friend lived and worked in UK for over seven years, paid a multitude of taxes and other costs into the local goverment funds and wasn’t allowed to vote! Oh and she wasn’t an illegal.
Germans are not coming over illegally, nor are they likely to be any trouble or resort to attempt to vote illegally as have no need to do so.
All immigrants are NOT the same, and so I suggest you don’t ‘tar’ all with the same brush, as some it sticks too.

Weird take on the facts, we have all been told for months unless you live in a cave in west wight that you can apply for a free photo ID,all you need is a passport photo and your NI number, thats where the trouble starts in that some people wish to live under the radar , using an alias, not wishing to give an address because your partner will no longer be treated as a lone occupant for benefits or you are claiming benefits under two or more names.

I see no problem with this at all. It has always puzzled me why you have been able to turn up at a polling station with no ID (you don’t have to produce your polling card) and just say who you are. Very easy to steal someone else’s vote, if you are so inclined.

I never vote anyway. They are all as bad as each other, all on the take and feathering there own nests. If the system we had now worked before, why change it? I can imagine ID theft and scams will increase when people send in the details required to get a “Free ID Card”
This will advantage the conservatives, though I get the need for fair voting. Give it a few more tory years and we’ll all be DNA scanned before voting, driving, travelling, getting treatment at a private insurance hospital because the NHS is gone. The future of normal people in the UK is going to be bleak in the extreme. Vote conservative at your peril.
