Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones is looking for volunteers on the Isle of Wight to make visits to check on the human rights and welfare of those held in custody at Newport. Independent Custody Visitors make unannounced visits to Police custody suites to check that people detained there are being properly looked after. They are completely independent of the police service. Training will be provided and travel expenses will be refunded for volunteers from the local area. Well at the last count the Commissioners staff amounted to about 15 people. (At vast expense)
Can’t imagine they’ll get many volunteers for this.
I bet they get plenty of volunteers. Some strange people out there get off on the idea of befriending people in jail. I once worked with an odd chap who had several female pen pals on death row in the USA. He even said one was his girlfriend and he sent her gifts. She had killed five people.

Actually this is a good idea. Not everyone in custody deserves to be there. Police can make mistakes and arrest innocent people that they have to question then once questions are conducted they are released.
These checks need to be done, it wasn’t long ago we saw videos of a big police officer pinning down a small female detainee by her throat in the cell at the newport station.
Being arrested does not mean you’re guilty. What is wrong with the people in the comments with their crazy anti woke rubbish. Got nothing to do with the woke crowd or snowflakes. Some people in society do not have the skills to defend themselves and are easy targets of over zealous cops. Such as the ones that will grab the nearest black fella and lock them up ‘just in case’. The real question that should be asked is why has funding for the police dropped so far that we need volunteers.
And to the right wing mob below, you are innocent until proven guilty, could be you locked up for doing no wrong next.
