Ventnor postwoman Lucy Ann Berry has raised over £600 for the charity PAPYRUS – the national Charity for the Prevention of Young Suicide – by completing the Brighton Marathon on Sunday (2nd April).
She completed the marathon in less than 4 hours – coming 12th in her category – despite having been injured in the period preceding her run. So far, she has raised £635 of her £700 target.
Lucy chose the charity PAPYRUS as she lost her stepfather to suicide 15 years ago.
Suicide is the biggest killer of young people under the age of 35 in the UK. The charity provides confidential support and advice to young people struggling with thoughts of suicide – and anyone worried about a young person – through their helpline.
Lucy’s partner, Shanklin FC footballer Pete Wilson, said:
“I’m incredibly proud of Lucy Ann Berry for smashing the Brighton marathon today, achieving a sub-4-hour time (3:52), especially after being injured for the past 6 weeks, so had little training in the lead up to it.
“She did it to raise money for the charity PAPYRUS, which gives support to young people who have thoughts of suicide, so please be kind and donate to such a great cause.
“It was her first ever marathon. She very almost didn’t do it because she got tendinitis in her foot, which really affected her training for the last 6 weeks with barely any running due to the pain.
“She thought she would give it a go and hopefully, it would be ok. Luckily, it didn’t hurt, and the buzz of the atmosphere and the crowd really pushed her around the course.”

Lucy has said:
“I felt surprisingly good as I crossed the finish line and was shocked when I saw how fast my time was because I didn’t think I would do it so quickly after being injured in training.
“PAPYRUS is a Charity close to my heart having lost my Stepfather (29) in 2008 to suicide.
“Thank you to my support crew Pete Wilson
“If you haven’t yet sponsored me, please don’t be shy. I would love to reach my target for PAPYRUS.”

A rarity, a beautiful person, inside and out. Hope she meets her target for such a great cause.
