A Ventnor couple – Sharon and Anna Bagley-Newton – have converted a former World War II air raid shelter in their back garden into a stylish bar.
The remarkable transformation of their back garden bomb shelter was recorded by the Channel 4 programme George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces and broadcast in Episode 6 of series 10 of the programme.
Sharon and Anna said:
“When we moved to Ventnor, we found an air raid shelter at the bottom of our garden. We were unsure what to do with this structure, and after much discussion we decided to turn it into a bar.
“George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces filmed us from start to finish and spent about 5 days here in Ventnor filming all different stages.
“We found it challenging and exciting; however, we really didn’t think the walls would be so thick. It took 8 days of really hard work and very large power tools to make the opening for our bar. On reflection, it was built to withstand bombs in the 2nd World War, so you would expect it to be built to last.
“Lots of people have asked us about the house and how the renovations are coming on. We have a blog: twowomenandapileofrubble.com; and an Instagram account –twowomenandapileofrubble – which we regularly update with the ongoing house renovations and other adventures we have along the way.
“It was hard work and challenging at times, but totally worth it to get the outside living space that we dreamed of.”
