Parts of Ventnor and Ryde are among the most deprived areas on the Isle of Wight, according to newly published national statistics.
The data – compiled by Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and published by the BBC on Thursday – says 3% of Isle of Wight neighbourhoods are deprived.
Within the map of the Isle of Wight, areas in Ventnor and Ryde are among the most deprived. At the other end of the scale, areas in Cowes, Bembridge and Seaview are among the least deprived.
The Isle of Wight ranks 139 out of 296 local authorities.
Among the worst areas in England are Middlesborough, Birmingham, Hartlepool and Hull.
The Index of Multiple Deprivation assesses overall living conditions in a given area, but it doesn’t mean that every person in a highly deprived neighbourhood is experiencing hardship, or that everyone in a less deprived area is living comfortably.
The statistics released on Thursday don’t reveal whether individual areas have improved or declined since the last report, but rather illustrate how they compare to each other over time.

For ‘most deprived’ areas, should we interpret this as weasel words for simply where the most irresponsible and work -shy and thus poorest drains on our resources are herded together? If 3 percent of the Island is classed as deprived, that also means 97 percent of the Island is not.Sloppy and misleading information and explanation I fear.
