Vandals have broken in to Sandown’s Ocean Hotel for the 2nd day running this evening (Sunday), this time throwing building materials and glass from the upstairs of the premises.
This latest incident is the 2nd in as many days after squatters were found living inside yesterday.
A group of youths broke in earlier this afternoon and began to throw things from the building, smashing windows and doors.
They then proceeded to sit on an outside balcony shouting expletives and making rude gestures at those watching the situation unfold.
Debris has landed on the Esplanade, but has been brushed aside to avoid causing punctures to passing cars.
Police were called at around 16:30 but have only arrived on scene within the last hour or so.
2 police officers are in attendance, and entered the derelict hotel to try and apprehend those inside at around 19:00.
UPDATE @ 19:55 – The youngsters have been found and escorted from the property.
UPDATE MONDAY – Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed that 2 boys – aged 13 and 14 – were removed and escorted from the building.
The 14-year-old has been dealt with by means of a community resolution for committing a public order offence, with a requirement to work with the Youth Offending Team, whilst the 13 year old is due to be interviewed further by officers.
A spokesperson from Hampshire Constabulary has said:
“Work remains ongoing, under Operation Spider, in partnership with the local authority, to find a long term solution to the issues at this premises, and the associated anti-social behaviour and criminality.
“This has involved serving a Community Protection Notice on the hotel owners with conditions to properly secure the site and prevent trespass.
“We thank the public for their patience while this work is carried out, and continue to encourage members of the public to report any concerns of ASB or criminality in this area to the police.”

Shame the Police don’t break their spine or neck in ‘resisting arrest’.
As our jails are now filled to bursting with imported low life, there is never again going to be room to jail our own, and ‘they’ know it.
No arrest and escorted away from the building???….it says it all, lawless Britain is broken, and the lowlife that breed are probably worse than the younger scumbags….more shixt will be along soon….
Can’t believe the actions of the Police. How could they do this. Just let the walk away without offering the a cup of tea an comfy chair and a lift home. Unbelievable.
These juveniles will be dealt with in slow time.
Not everyone who commits an offence has to be taken into custody. It is a difficult decision police need to take on whether to detain or deal with them in slow time by appointment later. Arresting juveniles means at least 4 hours in custody. Meaning police off the road, unable to respond, awaiting appropriate adults and solicitors, ..all the time other calls are coming in to be attended to.(such as your house being broken into). Its a necessary evil that has been forced onto the police to juggle their limited resources. Police would love to lock them up – trust me.
Put them in the cells until they have time to deal with them, that’s not a hard thing to do….we don’t want excuses, we want punishment that sticks….
I surprised the police never bought them an ice cream.
So the police took over 2 hours to respond? That extra 7% that was enforced upon us seems to be working well! Next they will send Bob Seely to deal with it!!!!!
You do realise that police have more than one call at a time coming in.? 2 x Vulnerable missing persons and a serious road traffic incident, to name 3. And the 7% does not magically open an “oven ready” box of police officers. They need recruiting and training, which takes a long time. The 7% goes a little way to reversing the Tory cuts of 2010 when 25000 officers and 20000 support staff were cut. The 7% will not go anywhere near replacing them. The current prediction, with officers retiring and resigning, is that it will take 14 years to get back to 2010 staff levels. Meanwhile incident reports have multiplied due to cuts other services.
On the bright side at least the hotel has had more residents in the past 2 days than it has in the past 2 years. And let’s face it, the building will NEVER be a working hotel again due to the deliberate actions of the current owner.
This is how it is ‘played’.
The owners, and perhaps council members with hidden vested interests, know that IF a building, or indeed a plot of land, is left for years, it will attract vandals, rubbish, and arson.
Then, after years of such eyesore, and danger the naive public, are then only too happy when it becomes masse housing, whereas, before it demolished and built to oblivion, the public would be totally against such.
So watchout for eventual change of use to squeeze more bodies here to enrich council coffers via council tax etc, providing better salaries, pensions, cars and expenses and jobs for family and friends.
Yes, I completely agree with your comment Ivy. And you put it perfectly. I put it as “deliberate” for the exact same reasons as you have stated.
These actions are done with such disregard to the local community and also with the local community KNOWING exactly what they are upto but as they YET press ahead with the agenda anyway with such disrepute shows that disrepute are inconsequential things at least or just minor, pesky facts that they will brush away at most by the upper part of society who will benefit from such landscape changing actions.
And let’s face it the chance that they paid these juvenile delinquents to carry on their slow vandalism is quite high!? “makes a change from a surprise arson attack”… We don’t want to be patient we want the law enforced because as somebody said on another link, if you have a, waft of bramble coming out of your hedge the Council will write, demand you take action within an amount of time or be fined! One law for one and one for another? Surely not on The Island
Smoke weed every day
You are obviously a complete muppet.
U are the muppet snitching on kids smoking leave em be it’s not like hotel gonna be running any time soon
I take it that you’re a pot – head as well, then? – Just what this Island needs!
And the cost of the police time has been invoiced to the owners of the building.
Hundreds of police just stood around crowd watching in London maybe would could borrow some of them? 2 hours for a response luckily they didn’t set fire to it in that time
Mind you, if this pathetic council we are lumbered with were any good they would have sent the bulldozers in years ago. Clearly the “owners” are not going to do anything as they have already assessed just how spineless the occupants of County Hall are. And so it will go on. IoW Council, get off your butts and do something for once in your lives. NOW.
Not bad going for the police that, 2 hours to turn up, 2.5 hours to enter the building, surprised they even bothered to show being petty crime, give the hotel owners 28 days to sort the site then bring in some compulsory purchase order to take it off them or this will go on for years, if the low life’s eventually destroy the building they get their way to demolish it and build flats
If only there were some kinds of youth club or programme to make sure kids had things to do other than be on streets. Oh wait thats right, they were all cut. Looking forward to the tory braindead thoughts on this.
These kids need to be dealt with in another way…….in a way that they will never forget!!!!!!
Got to be taught respect and to know it’s not ok to go around smashing everything up.
Parents, do your job, you’re responsible for your kids and their bad behaviour.
The Police encourage the public to call them to report ASB and criminality…???? What a joke I called omn 999 when 4 kids walked out but I could hear other kids inside smashing things…I was told they would not attend and ring the council…I said if someone gets hurt I would make a complaint and they said that’s fine
Name and shame should be the order of the day. Let the public know who has brought up these rat bags.
We holiday on the isle of wight every year and normally stay in a hotel Sandown however this year we stayed at shanklin as the Ocean hotel has ruined Sandown and with the trouble that is advertised along with it, come on IOW council get it sorted, you have a fantastic isle here look after it and get tough with the scum.. remember the police do a good job dont be hard on them
Hope you didn’t stay at Langham Court as I believe the Ocean, in it’s current form, would be an upgrade.
No we stayed at the Shanklin a credit to the isle of wight as are many things its a shame the owners of the Ocean are letting you all down, are they doing anything with the other eyesore The Grand by the animal sanctuary?
