A giant US aircraft carrier is to make its first visit to the Solent in over 12 years later this week.
The Nimitz-class USS Harry S Truman will be arriving off the coast of the Isle of Wight on Saturday (6th October) as part of a Western Atlantic Ocean deployment.
Islanders will be able to see the aircraft carrier moored up off Gosport throughout the weekend and into next week. The American vessel is expected to depart the Solent on Wednesday, however, further details on the estimated arrival/departure times will be published later this week.
The ship’s company of over 5,000 sailors are expected to descend on Portsmouth City during their stay, which is often a much-welcomed boost to the local economy.
USS Harry S. Truman is the 8th Nimitz-class aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, named after the 33rd President of the United States. The naval vessel is the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 8.
In July last year the USS George H W Bush moored up in the Solent for several days.
