An unwell woman aboard a 28ft yacht with a broken engine led to Cowes RNLI lifeboat racing across the Solent this evening (Thursday).
The yacht’s crew reported to Solent Coastguard that the vessel was drifting north-east of Hillhead Buoy, close to the Hampshire shore.
Volunteer crew members launched the Atlantic 85 lifeboat from Cowes at 18:10 before making best speed across the choppy Solent.
Eventually, the unwell woman was taken aboard on the lifeboat for a dash to Trinity Landing in Cowes where Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team were standing by. The woman was transferred into an awaiting ambulance and taken to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport.
At 19:50 the yacht also arrived at Trinity Landing, having been towed across the Solent by a RIB. The yacht’s 3 remaining crew members had been joined for the crossing by a member of the lifeboat crew.
