UPDATED: The discovery of an unexploded bomb has forced the closure of Shorwell Shute and Bowcombe Road this afternoon (Thursday).
Police have closed the main road connecting the village of Shorwell to Newport in both directions whilst they await the arrival of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Teams from Portsmouth.
The bomb disposal experts have been called in to examine and potentially detonate the device.
Island Echo understands the bomb is of a fair size, much bigger than a hand grenade.
UPDATE @ 14:40 – Police have now lifted the road closure having determined that the unexploded ordnance is a safe distance from the carriageway.
EOD are en-route to the scene – a quiet detached cottage off Bowcombe Road. Police remain in attendance.
UPDATE @ 18:10 – The 2in h trench mortar bomb has now been safely and successfully detonated by EOD experts.
The main Shorwell to Newport road has now fully re-opened following another short closure.
Police and Royal Navy Bomb Disposal are preparing to leave the scene.
