Tourists have been left baffled and locals angered as a result of satellite navigation systems sending motorists down narrow country lanes – and it’s all to do with a mix up over the road closures for next month’s Tour of Britain cycle race.
Traffic orders have been submitted to systems such as One Network stating that several major roads on the Isle of Wight are closed between now and 12th September. This incorrect information has in turn led to motorists being led up the garden path when traveling around the Isle of Wight today (Bank Holiday Monday).
Residents in Millers Lane, Carisbrooke have been moaning about gridlock down the single track road as a result of holidaymakers following their in-car sat nav believing Carisbrooke High Street is closed.
Island Roads has this afternoon said that motorists should ignore all of the road closures listed for the Tour of Britain and that they are working to get the situation resolved as soon as possible. It is hoped that the maps will be fully updated by tomorrow (Tuesday).
Road closures will be in place on Sunday 11th September, however, these will be rolling closures throughout the day.

We haven’t even had the event yet and it’s causing headaches
Until the 12th the roads are not closed Ryde and military road will be but the others are temp rolling closures for 30/90mins,why are so many signs saying roads closed 11am – 3.30pm?. And no stopping?. What about people on / getting busses if no stopping for 5 hrs?. Home shopping delivery, taxis etc ?. Been out today and so many signs are causing obstruction on pavement and also blocking being able to see traffic approaching junction which for two weeks is likely to cause accidents. And because small print some are stopping their car to be able to read.
The signs are out for 5 hour closures because there is simply no way of telling exactly what time the race will arrive on any given road.
Presumably, there will be crews ahead of the race closing down roads, and crews behind the race re-opening them. However, the roads can be closed for up to 90 mins at any time between 11am and 3pm
It starts, this chaos and it hasn’t even started yet. You couldn’t make it up could you. Who is paying for all those signs to, us the locals, those who didn’t want this mess. Still cash is king and us locals can go stuff themselves, us locals count for nowt.
Further to my recent comment on another post, What will happen at pedestrian crossing on the route? Cyclists are ‘supposed’ to obey traffic lights, so if a pedestrian wants to cross the road that has been closed to traffic, will the cyclist have to give way or will the pedestrians have to wait? Could anybody supply a sensible definitive answer to that. Will Island Roads have people manning pedestrian crossings to supervise? I think we should all be issued with Red Flags and body armour.m

speed limits do not apply to bikes currently. It is not illegal for cyclists to break the speed limit

I still cant believe that a few people on pedal cycles can be allowed to disrupt the whole Island. I can see no benefit to the Island other than an influx of weekend lycra clad loons clogging up our roads. I Just don’t believe the myth pumped out they are bring revenue to the Island. All they do is cycle around annoying motorist and then return back the mainland
Agree entirely they spend no money get free travel for their bikes and will bring the Isle of Wight to a standstill, yet when the Isle of Wight TT was proposed which would shut a very small sparcly are and bring millions into the Island.
It’s an international sporting event you muppet. World wide tv coverage. Live european coverage, with some of the best athletes in the world. It is NOT a few people on ‘pedal’ cycles. Educate yourself before posting utter drivel.
Are you sure about the live European coverage and best athletes when it clashes with the final leg of the Vuelta a Espana a bigger race of greater interest to cyclists and tv in Europe? What bad scheduling!

Totally agree, whilst it is credible that the IOW is actually included in the Cycling Tour of Britain how much did all the road signs actually cost including delivering them to each individual road, the posting of said road closures and then collecting all the signs back up at the end of the event. Then we will also have the cost involved for the removal of vehicles from affected roads to consider. Against a return revenue of ??????
What about all the last minute patching up of cracks and holes on the roads..
It’s estimated this race will bring an extra 10,000 visitors to the island. Some will stay the weekend. That’s going to generate a lot of badly needed income. I can put up with a bit of inconvenience for 1 day (and a 1 day screw-up by the GPS firms) for the sake of that.
All the signs for the tour of Britain say the roads are closed 11 to 330pm with no parking. Same sign times over the island …thought it was a rolling open/closed event
They also say no stopping for 24hrs 00-01 till 23-59 so no busses at stops,no home delivery,no taxi etc why? Originally they said no parking after 18-00 day before and until race has passed, for some that’s by 11-45 (they can’t park or stop for another 12 hrs after) so why now changed?.

But, it does beg the question as to how emergency services etc will get around during the Tour of Britain when most main roads are apparently going to be closed for 3-4 hours and where those on the route with only street parking will put their cars during the 24 hours of parking bans?
We’d better hope no-one gets ill during the hours of 11-3.30 or whatever it says on the signs being put up.
Also a number of extra mainland ambulances/ police are from mainland and would be relying on SAT nav,not good.

Island Roads and council have been far too premature with this cycle race. And this is the sort of crap which happens. It was unnecessary to dump those signs everywhere so early before the event, and that probably adds to the confusion for tourists. I have one on the pavement blocking my view to oncoming traffic when coming out of my lane, very dangerous. Complete prat must have put it there.
Ryde TC good at wasting our money. Every April they put up the RTC precept. With no regard to people now struggling to live. Just more buildings to buy, Empire to build.

This has been badly thought out as some people will be unable to travel to their destinations.
This appears to be what was Wightfibres due road closures which have now evidently been postponed owing to the lycra invasion.
As for the lycra “rolling road” closures, they are hardly that when they are a total road closure for 5 hours, cutting off many areas of the Island totally.
Rolling closures my ar*e, according to the warning signs Ryde esplanade and Easthill road will be closed from around 4am to 3pm, why has a major route got to be closed for 8 hours.

Rolling road closures mean just that – the roads are closed just before the race, with accompanying support vehicles enter a section until just after the last vehicle has passed and it is safe to open that stretch of road. This will happen for a period of approximately thirty minutes at any time between 11:00 and 15:30.
Anyone with an IQ in double figures could work that out – which explains why so many commenters fail to understand.

Completely wrong. Can’t see anyone on here complaining about the sports event coming to the island, more about our organisational capacity and capability to manage the impact effectively.
Web site says that rolling road closures for short time ,but signs say will be closed 5 hrs. Our main road says closed even before race starts, and can’t see any slow riders still out at 23-59? Maybe they forgot to add word rolling,but doesn’t explain why no stopping even after race has long finished – no stopping 00-01 till 23-59

I agree that commenters enjoy a good moan but you are missing the point here. Islanders have a historical mistrust of IR’s ability to either communicate effectively or stick to stated timescales therefore banking that everything will run smoothly during an inaugural major island sporting event (and on a Sunday) comes with significant scepticism.

Now I accept that you may not have been too good at English at school or maybe English isn’t your first language but the definition of “closed” is “not open for business or public access” and an example is “this road is closed to traffic”
I won’t question if your IQ is in double figures but may I make a polite suggestion? Release some of the tension on your lycra as it seems to be affecting the amount of oxygen available to your brain.
My wife and I drove to Godshill today, never saw a vehicle in front or behind us all the way. GREAT!

Recommend people avoid driving anywhere on the 11th September if this is anything to go by. Rolling road closures set to be a potential disaster.
OK so the cyclists won’t be spending much money on the island – but the support staff and the spectators will and their vehicles will be coming over on the ferries. Be honest – are you complaining about the cyclists or their Lycra?
On the map it shows the routes this event will take. So, why is the Fairlee Road posted as closed when it is not on the posted route map? Given that there will be many more people on the island, have the organisers factored in access to the hospital as well?
The signage is not saying its a rolling road closure its states the road will be closed from 11.00am to 15.30pm that’s two different statements that’s why I have heard some businesses are closing on the Sunday
Let’s hope Island Roads aren’t organising the party in that new brewery in Arreton.
This sounds great, all the tourists being sent down country lanes while we locals can use the quieter main roads. Don’t change a thing
amazing how people need to use a sat nav its a 26×17 mile island for gods sake. island people take no notice when there is road closed signs up just look at queens rd ryde. stop using tech and use what you should have in your head.
Finally had some post today and IoW Council have sent out flyers showing the route of the Tour of Britain and roads/areas affected. Jut don’t plan any trips out on the 11th September which is a Sunday.
Has the IWC carried out a robust risk analysis? And can the island’s infrastructure cope with this event Roads, first responders, hospital, Police, Marshall’s Alternative routes that create less disruption.. we want events like this but it’s of paramount importance it is organised by professionals and not the IWC cycle club ..
The behaviour of the iWC cycle club when they meet and set off on en masse Sundays from Yarmouth is diabolical. No consideration for pedestrians or other road users.
