A man has tragically died after being pulled from the sea at Sandown on the Isle of Wight last night (Sunday).
As previously reported by Island Echo, emergency services were called to Eastern Gardens beach off Culver Parade shortly after 20:00.
Despite the best efforts of members of the public, local paramedics, doctors from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and officers from Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team, the gentleman’s life could not be saved.
The man – thought to be in his 50 or 60s – is understood to have been pronounced dead at St Mary’s Hospital after being rushed in under Police escort.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:
“We are aware of the sudden death of a man at Culver Parade, Sandown on the evening of Sunday, 28 July.
“The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner”.
The incident comes just a month after another man died after being pulled from the sea at nearby Yaverland.

Thoughts are with the family. I was at the beach when this occurred and such sad news.
So sorry this occurred but the Council should pay for Lifeguards to be on the beaches during the high summer season…..we took the grand children for a swim there on Saturday and ended up looking after lots of young children while their parents ignored them and there were some pretty big waves for these little ones to cope with so we were nervous the whole time.
I hear what your saying above. As long overdue. However lifeguards would have been off duty at 8pm. Very sad for this mans family xx
I don’t see why the council should provide lifeguards when there’s struggle to provide other emergency services. It’s a case of person responsibility if you were that worried about these nervous children you should have spoken to the parents.
I was there at the near by pub so sad rip
Join the discussion…its up to the parents to watch their kids! Disgraceful!
of course it is the responsibility of parents to watch their children. some time ago my husband had enough concern while at freshwater to go and explain to a group of youngsters about the dangers of the under current. the mother of one of them, chatting some distance away, came charging over to challenge him. there’s no accounting for stupidity. her children had to reassure her he had been educating them, not telling them off.
