Motorists are facing significant delays heading into Ryde from Wootton this lunchtime (Friday) due to the unexpected closure of a main road.
Traffic is currently backed up from the Green Street/West Street junction to the top of Quarr Hill, described as moving at a snail’s pace.
It comes as a result of the closure of Queen’s Road in both directions – for currently unknown reasons.
The road is meant to be under a one-way system for a period of 10 weeks to allow repairs to a collapsed wall. For the past couple of weeks traffic has been able to enter Ryde via Queens Road, but with a diversion in place for outbound traffic.
Now, the closure of the A-road in both directions – which came into force last night – means all traffic is having to use Argyll Street and the 2 traffic light junctions at either end.
Traffic is snarled back along Green Street, Argyll Street, Pelhurst Road, Binstead Road and up Binstead Hill. Alternative routes include Havenstreet, or The Downs to Ashey.
UPDATE @ 14:02 – It has been confirmed by Island Roads that Queens Road has been closed due to a blocked sewer.
It’s said that Southern Water will be working hard over the weekend to resolve the issue.
Motorists are advised to avoid this part of the town if possible.

I know I was stuck in this horrendous jam earlier. Took me 40 minutes from Binstead Post Office to get to the traffic lights at the Queen’s Road junction. This was quite early this morning
God knows what the queue is like now this afternoon! All this chaos and delay, they’re only rebuilding a wall.
Blocked sewer.
shame when they decided to put lights at Argyll st that they did not put a roundabout end of Queens road
..
All the wall needed was to have a series of gabion cages built, and use the wall as it is demolished to fill each one. Thus keeping the old stones, saving the cost of carting them away, and easy and safe to do as one portion at a time could be removed and placed in the cage then move to the next section.
Cheap, efficient and safe, no wonder the council chose the slow, costly, and motorist frustrating way instead.
Tis what they do.
Pathetic, It’s difficult to find much more to say, They are just rebuild a wall for goodness sake. should only have needed to close the pavement. H & S gone OTT I suspect
Probably got to be room for 10 to stand watching 1 work
“Pathetic, It’s difficult to find much more to say”
Judging by the fact you needed to comment even further about the situation after that sentence shows it wasn’t too difficult after all.
True, It got easier.
This is island roads for you ,they have a bad habit of adding more pollution into the atmosphere by closing off roads so the motorist has the task of a double journey, and wasting valuable fuel into the atmosphere, well done island roads
Oh so predictable. If it wasn’t Southern Water it would be Wight Fibre.
Maybe because Southern Water and Wight Fibre are the main companies that would need to dig up the ground on the IOW so by definition, yes that is predictable.
And then the Gas board would re open it… and when they have backfilled with a spoon, SEC would dig it up again…
you hit the nail on the head , to lazy to renew the infarstructure all services will do is a cheap repair job and then they pay out big dividends to the shareholders, or a nice fat paypacket for the directors .
They filled sewer with concrete I was told
Absolutely Ridiculous… and true ! Says so on the Island Roads current Works Map, and what’s more it’s currently down to carry on until the 23rd.
Road is extremely slow, more onerous with our heat wave. If you can, best to seek an alternative route.
Almost the perfect storm getting into Ryde, they close one of the main roads in Holiday season, half of St Thomas street, and the seafront looks like a battlefield, understand that work has to be done, but seems they residents of Ryde, have had there fair share of disruption over the last two years, what with Wight Fibre last year in and around Elmfield last summer and Southern Water occupying a large part of the seafront last year, what’s in stall for summer 2023 for the residents of Ryde !!
I understand the Russians and Chinese may be flattening Europe and USA so we can start redevelopment from scratch
Easy to criticise. Difficult job in horrible conditions. Keep at it boys, thanks.
I just wondered why, when it’s been like this for a while, they wait until the busiest time of the year ?
They carry out these works at this time of the year mainly because tarmac and other building materials are softer and easier to remove making the job easier, faster and cheaper
Its taking 10 weeks, however long would it have been in November!
Really? I dku t they could work any slower. God help us if this is fast!
I just knew I shouldn’t have had that Phaal last night
i live where this has happend they put in resin in the gardens side of the wall. thiis caused the sewar to collapse and flood the basement of one of the houses .on digging up the road indeedconcreat had been put in so water had no where to go. now digging up road no time line lots more cost and no one has spocken to us about anything.
what a shambles ,a lot said for the quality of the workmanship in uk , another sample is Priory Walk Niton , Island Roads considers the repair of kerbs to be a permanant Fixture ?
Whizzed past on my Bicycle lol
Boom! Up the tread Irons!! Bit warm though
I don’t think I’ve ever seen the Island as busy as it has been this summer.
Excellent for anyone involved in the tourist industry. But roll on the end of the school holidays so we can get back to a bit of normality.
The reason this happens is because the traffic lights at the junction of Queens Road/BinsteadRd/Pelhurts Rd have not been changed to allow for he changed traffic flow. The traffic lights still work as if the thru traffic from Ryde to Binstead is till exiting Queens street. This traffic is now going via Argyll Street and Pelhurst Road where the traffic lights schedule is not clearly designed to work withis volume of traffic. When what is required is for lights on Pelhurts Road to now remain green to allow the backed up traffic to come out of Ryde.
Island roads haven’t got a clue about traffic lights. Every time they install a new set, we get queues there afterwards. Any single line of traffic gets priority over 2 way lanes, pedestrian crossings as well, even when there are no pedestrians. Absolute shambles, driving for a living on the Island is a nightmare these days
yes then i am trapped in queens road not street.people live there stop thinking only about your self.
Probably only working sometime over the weekend… but keep closed until Monday. How many times have you seen a lane closed, with a set of traffic lights, and when you go past the area, no one working, no holes in road, just cones marking off the lane… so sad..
you dont live here keep your stupid fews to yourself you know nothing.
John Giddings still holds the gold for traffic chaos and driver misery
!0 weeks to repair a wall. Hadrian was quicker than that to build his
