Discussions are being held to consider banning all cyclists from using the revetment between Sandown and Shanklin over concerns for the safety of pedestrians.
The Revetment Working Party, formed of members from all 3 Bay area councils (Shanklin, Sandown and Lake), have expressed concerns about the number of accidents involving cyclists on the sea wall and are therefore exploring options for the future of the link between Sandown and Shanklin.
Cycling was previously banned on the revetment until around 1995.
Island Echo understands that alternatives are also being considered including improving signage, using raised textures or even limiting the times at which cyclists may use the revetment, despite misgivings about how this might be effectively policed.
The issue was also raised at the recent CycleWight Committee meeting held on 9th March where members acknowledged that some individuals and groups do ride at excessive speed and that this is bad for everyone. However, members are pushing for any Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIP) drawn up by the 3 Bay area councils to go to a public consultation stage for local residents and businesses to have their input.
It comes 2 months after Island Echo reported on the removal of bins to discourage walkers from using the revetment after a series of small cliff falls on the coastal path. That decision was taken by Island Roads without informing local residents and businesses in advance and CycleWight are determined to stop the same thing happening again.

Whilst at it Ban Beryl Scooters too.
If that’s the case as well as banning Beryl scooters, you need to ban mobility scooters because they can be fast and dangerous, child scooters and bikes, the list is endless. Best paint a divide otherwise there will be know one going along there
could paint a cycle lane?
If there is dedicated cycle lane, then I am certain that many pedestrians would walk in it. just as they do elsewhere
Oh for Gods sake!!!!!
The council aren’t concerned about all the liquid mud running across the revetment.
Jeez h C!!
Really is that necessary a white line to split the path into cycle and pedestrian it’s plenty wide enough it’s part of the sunshine trail.
It’s a nice ride for cyclists, but maybe given number of small children, dogs on lead and elderly on path not Safe.
So they should be banned also stay off pavements and use cycle tracks provided especially when the track runs parallel with the road
about time too, the sensible ones are fine, but it’s a few idiots that get them all a bad name.
Same with car drives, just because a small minority crash when drunk shouldn’t mean the rest of us can’t drink and drive.
This is best news I’ve heard in years, but what about pavements and cowes high street,my grandson who is five was nearly hit by a cyclist down there,Cyclists are a danger to us pedestrians..Cyclists should only ride on the road!!!!
What is the number of accidents involving cyclists along the revetment then?
What’s the number of dead cyclists on the roads?
What a backwards step that is.
Just stick a dedicated cycle lane in there, it’s certainly wide enough.
How very dare you! Take away some of my pavement for theses cyclists?!? Back in my day the police would have taken them out back and seen to them. Same with the benders. Not enough fixing on this island for my liking.
Ban these selfish cyclists now. For they cause mayhem for people who wish to stroll, stop and enjoy life, not having to watch out for some ninny hurtling toward them, or worse behind them at speed.
Walkers only on footpaths, and let cycles go on the road, where THEY not innocent walkers then have to ‘take care’ being the underdogs for a change.
Maybe they will then have more respect for less speedy people.
Not on my roads! I drive close to them on purpose to discourage them. You’re welcome!
But it’s a shared use path, not a foot path… back in my day the schools actually taught people, I feel sorry for you youngsters.
Ok then fair is fair. If you limit the time cyclists can use it, then limit the time pedestrians and dogs can use it. Then no safety issues since the two parties don’t mix.
This man has it right! Life was better when we had segregation. None of this mixed stuff.
Get a car like the rest of us you make leftists!
Too many pedestrians have been killed by cyclists. They need to be banned for our safety.
I agree all pedestrians should be banned and made to ride tricycles backward!
Yes. Well, none this year, but I agree, none is one to many.
Or maybe a segregated path would keep everyone safe. People safe from cyclists, cyclists save from drivers..
As usual the idiots who just have to show off and tear-ass around ruin things for those who would like to ride sensibly along there, getting off if necessary where its crowded.
Are you sure about that 1995 date? I’m sure I remember the ban (or at least the signs) still being in place in the early 2000s.
Of course the council’s response to complaints about near misses and lack of enforcement at that time was to simply remove the signs.
If only many cyclists would simply SLOW DOWN when close to pedestrians, there wouldn’t be a problem. So ignorant and entitled not to.
If only pedestrians would walk to the left. If only pedestrians wouldn’t zigzag. If only cars would indicate.
We don’t live in a perfect world, but it starts with admitting that. Or we could ban cycling on there, and make them sit in traffic with us.
Why can’t you just paint a cycle lane?????
Or would you rather bike slow down traffic on the dangerous uneven roads. Not a brain cell in sight
this is ridiculous , it’s the quickest way to get from sandown to shanklin by cycling. Its healthier for me and the planet as I’m not using any kind of vehicle.
either they should make cycle lanes or add more signs. a lot of people just stroll down there with no awareness of what’s around them. they need to be aware cyclists use the revetment!
banning cyclists from using it is the worst solution, so many workers use that path to cycle to work and people like to use it for exercise also. ridiculous this is even a possibility, do they want to ban skateboards and scooters next? Good luck telling tourists in the summer their kids can’t ride their little bikes around down there either ♀️
What a joke!! Who do they think will enforce this? Haven’t plod just spent £1000s on electric bikes, which would mean not being able to use them on the revetment now??
No mention of the many cars, vans and trucks that drive along it daily, the heaviest/largest ones being IslandRoads.
If you’re going to bar anything, then bar the dog walkers who let their off-leads mutts poop everywhere, leaving it lying around.
It’s the dogs off their leads that cause the most accidents when they run in front of bikes and kids scooters. I’ve seen it. Keep them on the lead.
Will those cars and vans be paying to maintain it? It’s literally crumbling on the heavily trafficked bits. I think not, we’ll me subsidising them again.
So… what’s that number and seriousness of accidents they are concerned about? Kinda silly to say it’s the reason and don’t show the number 😀
There are quite a lot of accidents – and usually more serious ones – with cars and pedestrians. I assume we’re considering banning all drivers from accessing Sandown and Shanklin as well because there are some folk driving at excessive speeds? 😉
Oh, my, and Newport surely should ban all cars right away 😉
Ban them, they’re a dangerous nuisance, and not just here!
Nice to see Britons are so eager to ban other road users to protect pedestrians… sounds like an utopia!
Oh… right… only if other road users are cyclists. Cars in Newport killing someone every week is just fine 😛

You don’t understand, those pedestrians were in the road, it was there fault. When they are on a shared use path it’s the cyclists fault.
Always been surprised that their is no attempt at segregation, people walk all across the path as do cyclist. How about a line painted on the path, and cyclist one side, pedestrians the other.
We don’t like effective solutions here. Only regressive policies.
Will the ban include electric bikes and scooters ,? I doubt it !!!!!
People who ride electric bikes are high earners, same with electric cars. Soon they’ll be the only ones allowed on the road! This is the start of 15 minute cities. I’m warning you all. Do your own research.
Got the list of those accidents? How many made them express concern? 1? 10? 100?
Journalist don’t do numbers any more. Get so script mate
Absolute nonsence! The revetment is wider than most roads on the Island and can easily accommodate both cyclists and pedistrians. How about ensuring that dog walkers keep their hounds on leads? Furthermore, perhaps we could ban pedestrians from using the cycle paths? By the way, the revetment belongs to the IOW Council, so perhaps the town and parish councils should focus on the things they do well, such as hanging baskets, baking cakes and building toilet blocks for a cool half a million pounds!
Spot on mate…
Next, the council will ban all breathing..
need to do the same along the see wall along Appley. You have the option to let them on the top or the bottom of the wall but not both!
What would be the point when the ban wouldn’t be enforced, like all the other laws on the island?
Instead of banning cyclists do the common sense thing an have a designated cycle path closer to the cliff.
On the edge of the cliff preferably
We already have lots of cycle lanes. But most cyclists seem to prefer using the road, rather than the cycle lane that runs parallel to it.
were is the cycle lane from shanklin to yaverland?
It’s too many cycle lanes. That’s my tax money! We need to rip them all out and take back OUR space!
Cyclists are nuisance on the path. Weaving in and out of crowds and acting outraged when you dare to get in their way. Plenty of other routes for cyclists to use.
Plenty of other routes for pedestrians to use. The beach for one. And the cliff top for another.
Plenty of other routes for cyclists. Cycles should be on the road not the pavement. Get off your bike and get some proper exercise without pissing off the pedestrians. It is not relaxing talking a walk and having to be on the look out for bikes all the time. Virtually none have bells and they always think they have right of way. On a pavement!
My bad guys, it’s not the pavement they are talking about. It’s the shared use path, bikes are fine there. I don’t go on them anyway, they don’t allow cars on there. I never go anywhere without my car.
Plenty of other routes for annoying cyclists. Like the sea!
Oh faff off, the last thing we want is the Spandex Army tootling along on the main roads instead. Keep them on the revetment where they can do less damage to cars. Of course, the council don’t give a fig about that, because damage to our cars cost them nothing.
They don’t deserve either! Our roads, our shared use paths. They should be in cars like normal people!
Hi haven’t the council got better things to sort out in sandown than banning that wot about dog crap an other stuf
It’s common sense really if it’s busy lots of people around cycle slowly along there 5mph. If you go tearing along there when it’s busy obviously that’s an accident waiting to happen.
The latest Highway code already says that cyclists have a duty to protect pedestrians, who have priority over them. That just needs to be enforced, no extra rules.
It also say I can’t drink and drive, but no matter how maany times they catch me they never stop me
Let’s ban all fun and enjoyment.
We give these petty very councillors too much power.
Just paint a cycle road. The path is wide enough.
Cyclists will only add to the ones already breaking rules and cycle on the cliff path instead
