The removal of all rubbish and dog poo bins in a bid to discourage people from walking along the revetment between Sandown and Shanklin has been branded ‘utter madness’ by a local business owner.
As a result of a number of small cliff falls along the popular coastal path, the Sandown to Shanklin revetment has been temporarily closed by Island Roads. However, there is nothing stopping locals from walking along the beach at low tide, or accessing the revetment from clifftop footpaths.
In what seems to be a complete waste of time and money, Island Roads have this week removed every single bin along the revetment between the 2 towns – much to the disgruntlement and bemusement of residents and businesses.
Michell Abbot of Hinks Cafe, which is situated along the revetment at Lake, has said:
“We have not been informed the revetment is closed. We have not been told our business can not open and we were not informed the rubbish and dog bins were being removed.
“It’s utter madness to remove bins in a time when we are all trying to be more environmentally friendly”.
As well as discouraging the use of the revetment, Island Roads say that the removal of the bins is because they are unable to serve them – despite the area being accessible on foot and the toilets still being serviced by Lake Parish Council contractors.
A spokesperson for Island Roads has told Island Echo:
“In order to discourage public use of the revetment at this time, and because we are unable to service them while it remains closed as a through route, the waste bins have temporarily been removed.
“We will reinstatement all the bins as soon as the revetment is re-opened”.
Councillor Adrian Whittaker, Deputy Chairman of Lake Parish Council, has said:
“Over the last few days, I have been contacted numerous times about the dog bins and black bins mysteriously going missing along the revetment.
“An update given at Lake Parish Council’s meeting Thursday evening says that the revetment should be open for Saturday and the bins will be reinstated”.

What a carry on……pesky nature !
Either the cliffs are stable or they are not, has a structural inspection taken place, in a period of heavy rain followed by what looks very cold weather to come the fissures mostly hidden will crack open more.
Oh look, there are bins adjacent to a road with vehicles on! That must be dangerous so should we remove them for safety?
What a load of Betty swallox.
Anyone with doggy doo or rubbish is just going to hurl it in the sea.
What they really mean is they can’t be bothered to walk along and empty them.
It’s a long walk carrying all that rubbish and dog poo
Typical farsical behaviour by Island Roads and the council, yet again wasting our money for no reason and causing inconvenience to everyone. Guy Fawkes had the right idea when it comes to these lot.
Pity Island roads can’t remove all the Potholes in the roads!!
That’s because they’re too busy working on pavements that don’t need repairing.
The lunatics have truly taken over the asylum.
Nanny state strikes again. Put up some signs to warn of the danger by all means but people need to look after their own safety.
I was really looking forward to using the bins 🙁
More money than sense. In April they will be increasing our council tax by 5% to pay for it.
Island Roads are more barking mad than my dog.
Just created an extra job for themselves.
And they should have the decency to inform the businesses along there. What is wrong with today’s society???????
Pity we can’t on a whim,(just like the council), withhold parts of our council tax, for failure to provide services we have paid, for but the council are failing to provide.
I ask the question, why do we pay council tax up front? No other tax is payed up front, so why is council tax? It is a fact that once you have paid you have lost control of the situation. OK, so you pay the shop for the goods before you use them but you have legal ways of compensation if something is wrong. With the council there is no way you can get your money back when the goods (service) is below standard. Time for a big change here, next election?
In true English style we will do nothing about it, and probably vote Pinocchio Boris back in. Does anyone know where all the extra money from leaving the EU is. I am sure Boris had a bus with the the amount of money we would save every day written on the side……
So, you seem to be of the opinion that somehow Boris Johnson is responsible for this, otherwise why would you bring it up? Likewise, I’m sure many of us would like to know the correlation between our Council’s ineptitude and funding from the EU. Please expand.
I know the government’s unpopular at present (which government is EVER popular?), but to bring it up at every opportunity and try to link central government inadequacies with the Council’s actions over dog poo bins seems more than a little odd.
No I am just pointing out that as a nation we don’t stand up for ourselves, and we allow idiots and liars power over us….
This isn’t down to Boris, but the complete mess the country is in is…
Which one of the brainy mob councillors has come up with this s*it?
Do they get rewarded with a brown envelope for dreaming up some sort of cr*p that will put people in even more difficulty and turn the place into an even bigger sh*thole?
Not one of them fit for purpose they?
What I find ironic is its safe to spend time removing the bins but not to empty them.
You couldn’t make it up, only here!
Ban dogs from public spaces, take your rubbish home with you
Bans Dogs from public spaces? So are people supposed to just keep them indoors forever? As soon as you leave your property it’s a public space. I agree with take rubbish home if there are no bins but does that mean they can remove every single bin to save money as we have bins at home. You didn’t think about your comment at all did you.
Ban PEOPLE from public spaces…..
Do the Council honestly think people check before they go for a walk with their dog whether there’s dog bins and litter bins available?
Your dog does a poo and, hopefully, you pick it up, then you look for a bin to put it in. And, if there’s none, what are dog walkers going to do? Granted, a few will hold onto the bag and dispose of it properly but the majority I feel will simply leave it or, and you see this so often, hang it from the branch of a tree.
You do have to wonder at the intelligence of the average Council worker, and it certainly reinforces that perception when they come up with hair-brained ideas such as this.
Why should part of our council tax be used for people to empty dog dirt bins? If you have a dog it’s YOUR choice and YOUR responsibility to clean up and take it home. If you cannot do that then a mandatory dog license would pay for the dog dirt bins to be emptied.
As for general waste bins being removed thats’s just encouraging littering and fly tipping!
