Credit – Stephen BullSkips at Lynbottom are full to the brim after what is understood to be a mechanical breakdown this afternoon (Monday). The Downend-based site has seen lengthy queues and rubbish being dumped into any available skip – no matter the material. It is claimed that workers are unable to turn cars away and that instead, vehicles are heading to the tip only to find that half the bins have been locked off. Island Echo also understands that there is a lack of heavy machinery available to empty the skips and keep things flowing, with 1 Island Echo reader describing the situation at Lynbottom as a ‘meltdown’. Problems are also being experienced at the Forest Road site, with lorries unable to unload. Commercial clients attempting to drop off their waste have been turned away. UPDATE @ 18:00 – A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council has said:
“Due to an issue with a plant material handler – which processes the waste and loads vehicles in the Waste Transfer Station (WTS) – we were unable to load vehicles in the WTS. While our waste provider worked on an interim solution the site continued to manage the bin stock to ensure there was capacity and availability but this did slow down the process and cause delays. “Our waste provider has temporarily hired a replacement handler while the other is being repaired. Skips are now being emptied as normal.
“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and wish to reassure residents that any mixed waste will be separated back out and sent for recycling.
”Can we also take this opportunity to thank everyone for all their amazing recycling efforts with 99 per cent of waste diverted from landfill according to Defra (December 2020 figures)”.
Biffa, Westridge , Reynolds and Read have skip trucks, think excuses and more to this- maybe Council haven’t paid Island Waste or won’t pay overtime to staff.

Burn the rubbish and get some energy from it and people will be sending rubbish to the island to get rid of theirs and it will be profitable in the process
A lot of tips on the mainland have a free items or donation box for items that are still useable. Looking at all the planters I would say they could be recycled, perhaps the Council could make some money for local causes in offering this service rather than destroying it or disposing of it in other expensive ways we are a throw away society and sometimes there are many usable items placed in skips “because it doesn’t fit in with decor” attitude or outgrown, or no longer required. I am sure many community garden centres would take some of the items.
