Plans to close the ticket offices at Ryde and Shanklin stations are set to be withdrawn following intervention from the government. It was back in July that it was proposed that both the Ryde and Shanklin ticket offices could be closed. The plans were launched as train companies across the United Kingdom looked to cut costs to support operations. A negative reaction from the Isle of Wight community followed the announcement of the plans which were set to see just a single member of staff roving the platforms at Ryde and Shanklin on hand to help customers in need. The ticket office at Ryde was only completed when the transport interchange was upgraded. Transport secretary Mark Harper has now said that plans should be withdrawn.
