After the news of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the taking over of the throne by her son, King Charles III, here are the changes that have taken place to the National Anthem.
As we will get accustomed to in due course, the changes to the anthem under the reign of Charles are relatively simple as you may have imagined, with the main change being a simple one – Queen will now be King.
1 other change will see ‘him’ replace ‘her’ in the 4th line of the anthem.
This particular version of the anthem has not been heard since 1952 when Queen Elizabeth Elizabeth II’s father George George VI died and she took to the throne.
The song was, however, adopted as our anthem in September 1745 during the reign of George II (1727 – 1760). Back then, the name of the reigning monarch was inserted in the 1st line – a decision that has long since been dropped.
These changes will also take place across the Commonwealth, with countries like Jamaica and Canada – among others – adopting the song as their Royal or national anthem.
The anthem – traditionally sung at major events and ceremonies and which was sung at the proclamation of King Charles III in Newport on Saturday – reads as follows.
God save our gracious King!
Long live our noble King!
God save the King!
Send him victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the King.O Lord our God arise,
Scatter his enemies,
And make them fall:
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix:
God save us all.Not in this land alone,
But be God’s mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world o’er.From every latent foe,
From the assassins blow,
God save the King!
O’er his thine arm extend,
For Britain’s sake defend,
Our father, prince, and friend,
God save the King!Thy choicest gifts in store
On him be pleased to pour,
Long may he reign.
May he defend our laws,
And ever give us cause,
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the King.

You missed out:-
Lord grant that Marshal Wade,
May by thy mighty aid,
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the King!
And why did they miss that verse out do you think merp?
It was in the song that the National Anthem was based on, but never part of the National Anthem.
Well, I like it. I didn’t know it has a third verse, so now have the complete anthem. And “merp” is Anglo-saxon for “Clever person”, so it’s a term of endearment.
This is a handy guide as an IQ of less than 90 is common amongst royalist. It’s the only way I can explain the hysteria and and echo chambers that have built up around a family who have their position simply because of hereditary. Now, if there were an election, and they won, I would be right behind them, until the next election at least. It’s called democracy.
You do live in a democracy fred in case you hadn’t noticed, that’s why our royal family don’t run our country. But they are great ambassadors for us none the less.
And look at Russia now, since they got rid of their Royalty, You want an a’hole like ole pinut running amok over here as well? Could be worse, maybe a Trump type?
PS National Anthem, second verse, line 2, change ‘his’ to ‘him’
Whether you like it, or not, the fact remains that Donald Trump won the Presidential Election and that is not ‘Fake News’.
99 percent of the population of this country wouldn’t know anything but the first verse of this so called anthem anyway, including the royalists. They would just stand there mouthing like fish.
And this is a news headline?
There are five verses to the National Anthem if sung in full but some verses are less appropriate these days.
Interesting that the article has been completely re-written overnight. Also interesting to find out that there is no ‘official’ or ‘authorised’ version of our National Anthem, so we’re all wrong in many and various ways! Live and learn.
