Niton’s The Buddle Inn is to close over the winter months, it has been announced.
The news was announced on Facebook with the management team saying they would have liked to stay open over the winter but ‘unfortunately, it just isn’t possible’.
Shutting the doors of the South Wight pub this Sunday at 19:00, Character Inns have said that they will invest in a new kitchen and extraction system over the Winter, as well as finalising plans to put boutique accommodation above the pub.
Those in charge have said that they also hope to create a designated function facility, believing that it can ‘help The Buddle Inn thrive for many years to come’. It is hoped that there will be increased opportunities for employment as a result.
A spokesperson from The Buddle Inn has said:
“Taking into account all the work that will be going on and the associated disruption we have made the decision that it is best to close rather than guests have a sub-standard experience.
“In creating a designated function facility along with boutique accommodation we really do believe The Buddle Inn can thrive for many years to come – creating extra employment locally as well as boosting the local economy.
“We will naturally update you with our plans and developments as they take place.”

Another improvement which will likely remove something you can never buy or get back, character.
Still the masses don’t seem to care so long as there are air filled burger buns with some greasy brown disks all impelled by a skewer to impress the kids
Let’s expect I am right but hope I am wrong
Will it re-open next year ?
The Credit Crunch is getting at businesses in the winter months
Cost of Energy etc is the cause.
Wait until 2024 when Business rates will go through the Roof
Character Inns closing pubs for the winter and have sold 3 within the past 12 months. They are going bust. Clear as day. Been in debt for years. Wait for the change in names for the tax dodge.
Creditors’ Voluntary Arrangement in place since December 2022. Mike and Robert Benwell major creditors. Their other business The Market IOW Ltd is also insolvent according to Companies House.
Doesn’t look good – and what a loss to the Island!
Bring back John Bourne, always a great pub under his management
I agree 110% John and his late wife Pam knew how to run a pub.
It’s never been the same since.
Character Inns, depends what sort of character you want & for me it’s not what they think is character. Probably be card only, orders by your phone & served by a robot.
Yep, bring back John Bourne.
Absolutely agree.
John was the best
It’s incredible these days, people take over a pub and they expect to do no work. They employ, bar staff, waiting staff, chef’s, kitchen staff, cleaners and cellarmen. And then pay themselves a fortune, and wonder why they are making a huge loss! And each new landlord is the same. When I was young, the pub was run by the family, they did all the work, the husband ran the bar, and the wife did the cooking, the children helped out as soon as they were old enough. But you would need to be making a fortune to employ the staff they have in today’s pubs. And that is why so many are closing!
