National supermarket chain Tesco has announced that around 2,100 jobs could be cut as the company looks to make changes in its operations, which will impact the Tesco Extra store in Ryde and the Tesco Superstore in Freshwater.
The grocer said it was planning to cut 1,750 team manager posts across hundreds of its larger stores, such as Ryde, while closing roles elsewhere. A new tier of 1,800 lower-paid shift leader positions will take over running its shop floors.
From 26th February the hot deli counter at the Tesco Extra in Ryde will close as part of a national decision to close all hot deli counters due to lack of demand. Staff will be offered jobs elsewhere.
There are currently 5 Tesco stores on the Island, Express branches in Ventnor, Wootton and Lake, as well as a Tesco Extra branch in Ryde and a superstore in Freshwater.
Changes could also be seen to those who work overnight at the UK’s biggest supermarket, with unsociable evening roles moved to the daytime – cutting hourly rates. This could impact on the shopping experience for Islanders though…
Jason Tarry, Tesco’s UK and Ireland boss, has said:
“The decision was necessary to ensure we remain focused on delivering value for our customers wherever we can, as well as ensuring our store offer reflects what our customers value the most”.

So how will this “impact Freshwater”?
Doesn’t say in the article.
What about the new Tesco planned for the Laura Ashley site in Newport?
What Tesco aren’t saying is they plan to re-employ the team managers as the “lower-paid shift leaders”.
Good luck with that on the Isle of Wight.
Having had a wife and daughter who in the past worked for tescos. they are more top heavy with management than the local council or NHS and thats saying something. These so called managers spend all their time hiding in offices
Very true.
NHS & TESCO employ shirkers, not workers.
Not all Tesco employees stand around doing nothing. If you are aware of this happening
Another way of exploiting workers, staff doing the same job but being paid less money all in the name of more profit
Tesco if on a cost cutting exercise need first to check their flawed driver returns policy.
As it is, any items which are unwanted by home delivery customers are removed from their order by the driver, and then the drivers are then ‘supposed’ to return these items and leave them for ‘others’ to re-stock.
Yet there is no check on such.
So, many many drivers keep these items to sell or use, and it is not beyond doubt that some can get ‘friends’ to order expensive meat or alcohol then ‘refuse’ it on arrival, for it never to return to the store.
Unsure if all Tesco stores are as bad, but Ryde was/is.
No wonder our shopping bills are so high.
Please inform us how you know this to be the case, do/did you work at the store? or is this just a made up story to discredit the company or its employees?
Clearly I know as you would IF you worked there of the method of drivers ‘returning’ unwanted items and those items not being checked but trusted to be placed in the store with no records being kept or checked.
I have NO issue with Tesco or its employees as it is the lack of checking that is the issue and that needs or needed addressing IF it still is the same and reliant on trust.
Tesco assume that by monitoring movements of delivery drivers vans and having exclusion zones around drivers homes is all the security they need.
Naive at best imo.
You are paid to sort it, I am not.
Sick of paying higher prices to cover scams, IF it still is as it was.
You clearly have no clue
What an absolute load of rubbish
If you believe there to be so called exclusion zones around drivers homes I think your the naive one
You clearly have serious issues, You are accusing staff past and possibly present of serious organised crime at Ryde and possibly nationwide! You do realise your comments are being read to a very wide audience.
Need to compete with Lidel etc I guess, so saving costs.
They won’t be the first and pretty soon the now benefit claimant population can have a good ‘excuse’ for not working as jobs dry up rapidly as recession bites deep.
I doubt any employee of Tesco could do a days work in
Lidl or Aldi (They would have to do some work)
We work very hard at my store, so paint all of Tesco employees with the same brush. We have lack of shop staff , that’s customer assistance and work on all departments that we are trained for. So don’t comment your opinions unless you work on the inside. Thank you
Sad to see the hot counter go. Choice for my lunch gets narrower and narrower. Bread, bread and more bread (no thanks).
I’ve heard that all of the counters are closing. Big mistake. We don’t all want prepacked food.
British supermarket chain Tesco has reported that its statutory revenue for the first half (H1) of fiscal 2022/23 (FY22/23) grew by 6.7% to £32.5bn ($36.4bn).
The company’s sales, excluding value-added tax and fuel, rose by 3.5% on a constant-rate basis to £28.17bn in the six-month period.
This translates to Tesco will do anything to keep shareholders, if that means cutting corners then so be it. They are completely motivated to make profits. All they’ve done is drive a large wedge of customers into the doors of their rivals.
Noooooooo!!!! We love the deli counter :(it’s brilliant. The chicken pieces and Cumberland sausage are such a treat that’s a terrible shame. No demand? Really? I’d have it all ha!!!!
When you take into account the home shopping carts and now daytime shelves being stocked will there be any space left for us shoppers?
Tesco employ too many members of staff who walk around doing
nothing.
Think of Shareholders.
Pressure from the share holders one asks, maybe?
Tesco ‘stiffing’ their employees again. I hope they don’t lose too many ‘experienced’ middle tier managers and replace them with ‘haven’t a clue, no people skills’ younger versions.
Tesco has changed so much over the years and not for the better IMO. just look at the lack of uniform now. Scruffy jeans and trainers. Not a good look for Britain’s largest, most successful supermarket!
Went to Tesco just before Christmas (big mistake!) and there were large queues at the checkout. I went to the self service (hate using them) and as usual it didn’t work correctly. I said to the assistant that I always had trouble with the system. She said ‘best get used to it, the tills are going to taken out, bar 3 and the area being converted to self service’ I haven’t been back to see if it has happened
