A record 70 tennis players competed in August’s annual West Wight Tennis Tournament, in aid of Mountbatten Isle of Wight, raising an amazing £3,184.
Matches were played on courts across the area and the big final took place at Westover House in Calbourne, with thanks to Caroline Weeks.
In the final match, Mark Grzegorczyk and Jan White triumphed over their worthy opponents, Peter Burger and Susan Scoccia, to take the win.
The event was attended by Mountbatten CEO, Nigel Hartley, who spoke about the work of the charity, including its 24/7 care for patients in their own homes and in the Newport hospice.
One-third of Mountbatten’s funding comes from the NHS, but this is under threat and it has not risen in line with inflation. It means the other two-thirds of the money Mountbatten needs to ensure staff can continue to support Islanders and their families — which comes from donations and the community — is increasingly important.
Tennis tournament organisers, Chris Goodman and David Robinson, have thanked supporters, court owners and generous sponsors, without whom the event would not have happened.
