A Ventnor man who made hundreds of nuisance calls to the coroner’s office and emergency services about the death of his late wife has avoided jail.
Paul Sainsbury, 68, of Leeson Road in Ventnor, appeared before Magistrates for sentencing last week having been charged with 3x persistently making use of public communication network to cause annoyance.
Liz Miller, prosecuting, said that on dates between 15th February and 29th November, Sainsbury sent calls to operatives at Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and the Isle of Wight Coroners Office.
It was heard in court that the reason for all of Sainsbury’s calls was his disagreement with a decision made by His Majesty’s Coroner regarding his late wife’s death back in March 2021 – which was recorded as a drugs-related death.
On these calls, the 68-year-old was found to be using threatening and derogatory language including calling call handlers ‘sh*theads’ and a ‘waste of f*cking space’.
It was also noted that Sainsbury’s calls often blocked the phone system at the coroner’s office and that his repeated spamming impacted on the service of both the police and ambulance service.
Sainsbury was last in court in 2020 when he was charged with a public nuisance offence. At that hearing, he was told that if any further offences were committed that custody would be a real possibility.
At the January hearing, Jim Osborne, defending, said that his client strongly disagreed with the decision that was made regarding the death of his wife and that the calls he made were an urgent plea for help.
On Friday, Magistrates sentenced Sainsbury to 12 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for 2 years, with an order making him subject to 90 days’ alcohol monitoring and 25 rehabilitation sessions. He was ordered to pay £85 costs and a £154 victim surcharge fee.

So he did the wrong things for the right reasons, isn’t that what we do in a war. The agencies concerned admit they made mistakes, which is doing the ‘right’, but incorrect and unjust thing, for the wrong reason and poor old sod gets punished… Wrong is right, man is woman, woman is anti-trans, I am a kettle, and all animals are equal, except some animals are more equal than others. Destination I.W. 1984. Except it was nicer then.
Correct so what’s happening about the agencies that made the mistakes? NOTHING AT ALL. The incident man who just wanted to be heard gets in trouble crazy world we live in
From the original coroner’s report:
AN ISLE of Wight woman died from a drug overdose after the keys to her medication cabinet were left out, an inquest heard.
The court heard the keys to her medication cabinet were held by her husband at all times, but they had been left out the night before.
In the evening, Mr Sainsbury had been drinking and the keys slipped down the side of the sofa.
He only has himself to blame.
End of story.
Sounds more like someone has been let down by our terrible systems too me
Sainsbury got drunk and left the keys to the cabinet containing his wife’s medication lying around. She found them and took a fatal overdose.
Sounds like she was let down by her drunk husband who is now blaming everyone but the person truly responsible for her death.
Him.
Do not feel sympathy for this bloke. He was horrendous to her
Even if someone makes a mistake there are adaptive and maladaptive ways to get your point across. Sadly many think shouting loudly in an inebriated state and acting like a jerk is the right way.
