The discovery of what is suspected to be a piece of wartime ordnance has led to Coastguards being tasked to Lake.
A member of the public spotted the potentially explosive device whilst enjoying a walk between Sandown and Shanklin yesterday (New Year’s Eve).
The mainland visitors sighted what has been described as an ‘unexploded shell’ and, being a former bomb squad member, thought the discovery warranted alerting the authorities.
HM Coastguard was made aware of the find and mobilised officers from Bembridge and Ventnor, with part of the beach cordoned off to the public.
Due to the tide, the decision was taken to return to Lake today (New Year’s Day) to carry out further investigations.
Bembridge and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Teams are currently on scene along the Bay revetment.
