A Ventnor man who was stopped by Police after he disembarked from the Red Funnel ferry has been disqualified from driving after being found to be driving whilst unfit through drugs.
William Kinley, 59, of Albert Street, admitted drug driving when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday.
Liz Miller, prosecuting, told the court that on 17th October, at around 03:20, Police received a report of a strong smell of cannabis coming from a Renault Master van on the Red Funnel ferry from Southampton.
Officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary made their way to East Cowes to pull Kinley over once he left the ferry terminal. They did so on York Avenue.
Kinley was taken to Newport Police Station where a blood test was carried out. Once analysed, results showed a cannabis reading of 4.6 ug/l – the legal limit is 2.
The 59-year-old had not been in trouble with the law since 1990.
Kinley had suffered numerous family bereavements in the lead up to the offence, including that of both his parents, said his solicitor Oscar Vincent. He also added that Kinley had not smoked cannabis for some considerable amount of time before the incident.
William Kinley was handed a 12-month driving ban. He was also ordered to pay a fine of £120, costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £48.

I think it’s terrible.
Try walking around Bouldnor – the smell is often overwhelming.
These youths need to be stopped!
59 year old youth
It was probably his grandsons! Youths making there grandparents take the blame are terrible
It was a 59 year old.
There is a reason why society call people who smoke it dope heads lol. We rest our case.
Why can’t these idiots smoke at home? Why do they always feel the need to be stoned whilst operating a motor vehicle?
Legal limit is 2 ? there should be no drugs in your system
How can you have a legal limit on an illegal substance ???
Because the limit is concerned with road safety, not enforcement of drug laws.
Perfectly possible to have some THC (the active component of cannabis) in your system without actively taking it yourself, so there has to be some limit (i.e not zero).
In any case, having a drug in your system is not an offence in itself. Possession of cannabis is an offence but being stoned is not.
Very good point A.
My young lad asked me why teenagers know where to buy drugs, but the police don’t…. When you walk around Ryde, you gotta wonder!
Because if you take drugs away from young people they start to vote. That doesn’t end very well for you or me.
