Staplers Road in Newport is now open to traffic in both directions following months of water main replacement works by Southern Water.
The one-way system that has led to diversions in the area since January has now been removed, allowing traffic to flow in and out of Newport freely once again.
However, Southern Water have confirmed that the work is not over yet…
A spokesperson for Southern Water has said:
“Due to network issues we were unable to carry out the final connections and work needed to complete this scheme. We’ll be working closely with Island Roads, and to avoid the busy summer season, we will look to re-plan this work from September.
“We’ll remain onsite to connect customers to the new water main, however this work will be in the footway and will not affect traffic.
“We’d like to thank motorists and residents for their patience during this work, and we’ll update customers on the final phase of work later in the year”.
It’s not the first time that a water main replacement programme has overrun. Schemes at Cowes, Brading and Ryde have all lasted longer than expected in recent years.
Work to reinstate the recently-laid road surface will be carried out in May over a period of 3 nights, with road closures.
