Visitors arriving at Victoria Recreation Ground in Newport are being greeted by purple crocuses.
The beautiful display is thanks to a generous gift from Vectis Sunrise Rotary Club tto Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council.
President of the club, Ron Bowler said:
“Spring each year sees a beautiful purple carpet of crocus blooming in many communities across Great Britain and Ireland thanks to the Purple Crocus Corm planting to raise awareness of the Rotary fight for a polio free world.
“Planting the purple crocus corms by Rotary and many community groups is a great way of getting active, having fun, and talking to lots of different people about the need to eradicate the life threatening and disabling polio virus. COVID restrictions made it difficult for the community to become involved, however in October 2021, Vectis Sunrise Rotary will be able to supply a further 4000 corms and increase the impact and marking the arrival of Spring 2022.”
Chair of Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council, Cllr Julie Jones Evans said: –
“This project really makes me smile, not only when seeing the beautiful carpet of flowers but also the thought that the world could be free from polio in the near future, my uncle had polio as a teenager and so this strikes a chord with me. I’m looking forward to October and joining in with planting some more corms with the Vectis Sunrise Rotary Club”.
