A World War II Spitfire had to make a precautionary landing at Sandown Airport on Friday when the aircraft’s engine began to run rough. Having declared a situation over the airwaves, the iconic fighter plane touched down safely at Sandown Airport and taxied to a hangar, where repairs got underway on Saturday. With engineers happy with the performance of the Merlin engine, the aircraft was cleared for take off once again late on Sunday morning. The unexpected presence of a Spitfire was a joy to the crowds who had gathered at the airport for the 1940s weekend event. Spitfire NH341 ‘Elizabeth’ was used by the Royal Canadian Air Force’s No. 411 ‘Grizzly Bear’ Squadron in the Second World War.

Every time I see and hear this beautifuly restored Spitfire (you usually hear her before you see it) it gives me goosebumps. It’s probably ‘Tillys Anus’ playing up again. Those with more specialised knowledge of the aircraft will know what I’m talking about.
Miss Schilling’s Orifice……
It is hard to comprehend that some years back, people over in the ‘East Wight’ complained about the noise and disruption of these planes flying over them? My response would have been, you wouldn’t have complained in 1942?
I love to see and hear these fantastic British machines still flying over us. Not many places in the country can compete with that. Enjoy it while we can before some ecoclown bans them due to the emissions!
You are so right, I love to hear and see them flying overhead, some people did moan but I don’t think they realised what these wonderful aircrafts were and their objections were quickly “shot down in flames” by people here in East Wight. Long may they continue to fly and remind us of what we owe to them and the brave boys flew them in combat.
So totally agree, can fly over my house every hour and I’d still run out the house to watch it fly over. Such an iconic sound. Wish I could win the lottery just to have the money for a flight in one.
Best place for it! What a noise nuisance. Put these things with the Vulcan or drag them out for air shows only. Quite often I’ve found myself sat on my imaginary AA gun spitting my own fire.
And right on cue…
It’s thanks to them that you’re not speaking German!
