Royal Navy Bomb Disposal experts were called to Totland this morning (Wednesday) following the discovery of a smoke grenade on the beach.
Police were alerted to the situation at just gone 17:30 yesterday evening when a member of the public found what they believed to be a suspected piece of ordnance.
A cordon was erected around the item with a scene guard in place overnight.
The Royal Navy’s Explosion Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from Portsmouth arrived in the West Wight this morning and carried out a controlled explosion.
It has been confirmed that the item was a degraded smoke grenade.
