Smoke alarms have helped save the lives of a Yarmouth family after their tumble dryer caught fire during the early hours of this morning (Saturday).
2 fire appliances from Freshwater and Newport were mobilised to South Street in Yarmouth at around 03:00 when fire control received a 999 call from the householders.
The activation of working smoke alarms alerted the family to the presence of fire, allowing them enough time to safely evacuate the property and alert Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the house and swiftly extinguished the fire, confining it to the room of origin.
Positive pressure ventilation was then used to rid the property of smoke and the offending tumble dryer was removed from the property.

Are we to assume that Yarmouth Fire Station does not have a Crew any more just like Bembridge ?
Yeah, we have a fire station & engine here in Yarmouth. No idea why it wasn’t called out? Lack of crew maybe? Anyone know?
Thank goodness they had smoke alarms !
Could have been a lot worse….
Probably 1 of the best investments you can make definitely saved lives and a lot more damage to the household…
A reminder to all get a smoke alarm check regularly!!!!!
Also carbon monoxide detector !
Worth every penny …..
Must ask what was the dryer doing on at this time of the morning ,was it on while residents were in bed asleep ,possible on timer using cheaper electric .
good for working smoke alarms ,but please remember prevention is better than cure
