An Isle of Wight chain restaurant has improved its food hygiene rating after inspectors previously found poor standards.
The Sloop Inn, in Wootton, was slapped with a score of 2 in March as Isle of Wight Council environmental health officers uncovered mouldy pipes and decaying short ribs.
Now, after a reinspection, the carvery and pub has drastically improved, replacing the ‘improvement necessary’ rating, with a ‘very good’ five-star.
The Sloop’s parent company, Stonehouse Restaurants, has been contacted for comment. Previously a spokesperson said it was disappointed with the bad rating and had already started to make improvements.
The inspection took place at the end of July but the findings have only just been published.
Across 3 categories — compliance with food hygiene and safety procedures; compliance with cleanliness requirements and confidence in management/control procedures — only a couple of issues were raised at the follow-up inspection.
There was no cold water flowing fully in a wash hand basin; a light above the deep fat fryer was out and a fly unit needed replacing.
Inspectors reminded the restaurant to follow its procedures after it saw hash browns being cooked in a meat fryer.
Documentation was also checked including pest control procedures and temperature monitoring records.

Its ashame about the broken pizza oven, lack of communication from staff and the general poor service and food, wont visit here again regardless of food hygiene rating….rant over
The hygiene rating may have improved, but make no mistake the breakfast is still shocking. Most of it was lukewarm at beast and as for the bacon, I decided to nail it to the soles of my boots, they should last forever now. We were the only ones there and I can well see why. Will stick to the Beefeater in future, far superior.
What the hell do you expect for an all you can eat breakfast with a choice of sausages, bacon, eggs, beans, tomatoes, hash browns, fried bread, as much bread and butter as you want – all for under £6. It is hardly going to be the best gourmet quality fayre is it! Bloody good value in my opinion.
As for hygiene ratings, any food establishment that you go in that cooks food for you has an element of risk. It makes me laugh when people say they won’t go there simply because of some rating by a faceless bureaucrat.
What I expect is for it to be hot and edible! This was neither, therefore even if it was 50p it wouldn’t be good value. If you think it’s good value, then you go on down and fill your boots.
I do, and will, go on down, but I will fill my belly not my boots!
Not since bank loans became necessary for a round of drinks have I been to the Sloop. This was years ago before the pub was re-branded and painted a banal and non-descript white with a black sign. It used to be good, I thought. My wife and I often went round for evening meals. It might still be okay inside, I wouldn’t know. What I do know is that the cost of drinks has rendered the Sloop totally out of bounds, as in fact are all pubs nowadays.
Food is good value for portion size, drinks are same in all pubs,£2-75 for 1/2 Lt coke, I can by a 2lt for £2 from shop.
Once a place gets hit over the head by the EHO the first thing they do is a deep clean of all the nasty areas.
So for a short time it should look good, but it never lasts.
The fact that they were operating under such disgusting conditions in the first place will have put people off from using them again, i wouldnt eat in there after reading that report.
Nothing would entice me back.
Stopped eating out altogether now.
Much too expensive.
I could buy a weeks shopping for the same price as a meal out for two with a drink.
Not just the Sloop.
I used to love dropping in for a Carvery when it first opened with family and it was good value for money back then but it is all so expensive now everywhere to eat out.
I was embarrassed when I took my relations to eat there before the inspection it was so bad.
Not sure if I will give it another try or not.
Of course you won’t give it, nor any where else, a try. You’ve just said “Stopped eating out altogether now.
Much too expensive”
Or did you imagine the prices are going to fall?
