A fault with the permanent set of traffic lights at Downend on the outskirts of Newport has led to the erection of temporary lights, which are causing significant delays in the area this morning (Wednesday).
Island Roads say there is an issue with the lights outside the Hare & Hounds so, in the interests of safety, 3-way temporary traffic lights are now in operation.
As the temporary lights cannot replicate the permanent set, delays are lengthy in all directions – especially for those heading towards Newport from the East.
Tailbacks are reported to be back towards Lime Kiln Shute.
Island Roads say that engineers are on their way to the Island to fix the fault, with hopes that the issue will be resolved later today.
Just dump the lights and put in a proper roundabout. It’s always better when the lights aren’t working. While you’re at it, put another proper roundabout at the bottom the hill too.Why can’t those who are supposed to make decisions about our roads not see this. Do they not drive?!

Agree. It was much better when there was the roundabout by B&Q.
When coming from B&Q now and wanting to go Yarmouth direction you are in no man’s land.
Obviously okay when you know where to place your vehicle but should be obvious to a visitor.

Agree there is room for a roundabout at the bottom of the hill by the wooden hare. I wrote to Island Roads some years back and they agreed to a roundabout there and as a matter of safety and would contact the IW Council. Then………. nothing.

Roundabouts like the one at Robin Hill, just back from the lights? The roundabout which favours traffic pouring onto it from Newport causing a huge tailback up the Briddlesford Road past the tip?

I was caught up in them last night after work and it was a complete nightmare trying to get off Briddlesford road. I was stationary outside of the tip for half an hour with traffic from Long Lane filtering out with right of way. Mini roundabout there would be so much better for traffic flow and air pollution. It’s not the temporary lights it’s the Island Road staff who don’t set the phasing. It’s not hard. I sat in traffic on the Downs Road for an hour, when I got to the Hare and Hounds there was no queuing traffic from the Arreton direction or from Robin Hill. Just two Island Roads staff chatting to each other having a laugh and joke.
There are timers on the temporary lights lights that should have been set to give priority or a longer green to the Downs Road. Clearly this is beyond the capability of their staff, just causes mass disruption to the public who are paying their wages.
This is replicated across the island. It’s about time they were called to account.
Surely there are people on the Island who could fix traffic lights.
