Christians from across The Bay area will take to the streets of Shanklin this Good Friday (18th April) as part of a traditional Walk of Witness to mark the climax of Holy Week.
The annual procession will see participants accompanied by costumed Roman soldiers, taking turns to carry a wooden cross through the town.
The story of the crucifixion will be read in parts as the group stops outside various churches.
The celebrations continue on Easter Sunday (20th April), with a sunrise gathering for worship at the bottom of Hope Road at 05:45. Local churches will come together to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus as the morning dawns.
Brian, Pastor of Shanklin United Reformed Church, has said:
“It’s great that local believers will once again be gathering on the seafront at sunrise to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus.
“These have been wonderful times of celebration over the years, and it’s been good to share breakfast together and build friendships across the various congregations.”
Later that afternoon, members of Shanklin United Reformed Church will return to the beach to witness the baptism of a local teenager in the sea.
Let’s never forget the real reason of Easter,
it is not all about scoffing easter eggs.
