Shanklin FC remain in the Island League title race after beating Ryde Saints 2-1 at the County Ground on Tuesday night and as a result now trail leaders Whitecroft & Barton by just 2 points.
Ryde Saints began the game brightly with youngster Cian McGee coming close for the visitors in the opening minutes of the game.
However, it was Shanklin who were to score first when Ji Nash put Wayne Newnham through to tap the ball home in the 14th minute of the game. (1-0)
The home side were unlucky not to score a second, when Ryde Saints goalkeeper, Ben Orton, made a magnificent one-handed save to tip a dipping strike by George Carter-Knight just over the crossbar.
Saints then got an equalizing goal shortly before half-time through a powerful thirty-yard free kick from Coner Lyon. (1-1)
HT: Shanklin FC 1-1 Ryde Saints
Shanklin appeared the stronger side in a competitive second half against a young Ryde side. The visiting Ryde side lacked the attacking strength of one of the Wessex League’s most prolific scorers, Newport’s Connor Kelly, who was injured on Saturday.
Ji Nash, who had proved himself a handful for the Ryde defenders all game, made the breakthrough for Shanklin with a low shot in the 59th minute. (2-1)
Shanklin nearly scored a third when the ball bounced off the post from a corner. Neither side managed further strikes on target, and the game ended as a 2-1 victory for Shanklin.

Ryde manager, Andy Brown, thought his team had been unlucky. Andy said:
“I thought a draw would have been a fair result.”
On Saturday, Ryde Saints face reigning champions, Whitecroft & Barton, at Smallbrook.
