Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club travelled to Southampton at the weekend for the BTC Spring Head and returned with 4 victories and a 2nd from the 5 crews entered. The race against the clock over a 5km course on the River Itchen saw an impressive performance from Louis Sheasby and Carter Horrix in the J16 double sculls, winning by over 2 minutes, which bodes well for the upcoming Junior inter-regional trials. Fred Giemza-Pipe also took the top spot on the podium for a 2nd week running by winning the Men’s novice sculls race, after taking gold at the National Junior Indoor Championship last week. These 3 young athletes, with Arlo Adds and Esme Walters (cox) then contested the Junior Men’s River 4 event, and with a strong 2nd half of the race, secured the club’s 3rd win of the day, just ahead of Newport. The mixed master’s 4 of Stella Gamble, Paul Gamble, Gary Burch, Lisa Robertson and Jane Denby-Roach (cox), also took the top spot in their category and with the club’s young J16 girl’s coastal quad – 3 of the crew being J14 – of Izzy Bounds, Evie Crew, Rose Collier, Layla Katirewa and Jane Denby-Roach (cox) sculled well in their event, to finish just behind Itchen based Coalporters.
Ryde Rowing Club also competed in the BTC Spring Head event…
In Division 1, the Men’s Coastal Junior 4, the crew of Lars Groothuis, Isaac Gibson, Joe Roberts, Charlie Watts with Harry Watts, cox, finished 2nd in their section with the Men’s Coastal Novice Four of Ben Robotham, Fin Diffey, Lucas Georgiou, Joe Bird, and Ruby Reid, Cox finishing in 5th place. Ryde Rowing Club also had 2 Men’s Novice River Sculls competing: Paddy Kearney who finished in 4th place and Yogi Ashworth who finished 6th.
