Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club’s Men’s Junior Four moved within 1 point of the top of the Hants & Dorset championship after recording their 6th win of the season at Western Shore in Woolston last weekend. The crew of Arlo Adds, Carter Horrix, Louis Sheasby, Fred Giemza-Pipe and Esme Walters (cox), led from the start in the final and, following an excellent turn, stretched their lead out to 2 lengths to take the victory. The crew will now have a chance to secure the championship over the same course at the beginning of next month. There was a 3rd successive win in the Men’s Junior sculls for Fred Giemza-Pipe. There was a 3-way tie going into the buoys with Fred finding himself in third place after the turn; however, he regained the lead in the last 300m to claim the win and his third point in the championship. The master’s ladies crew of Lisa Atkin, Stella Gamble, Jane Denby-Roach and Lisa Robertson enjoyed a good row but struggled in the blustery conditions on the return leg from the buoys to finish in 5th spot.
Ryde Rowing Club also competed at the Woolston event.
First afloat was the Boys J16 Quad of Lars Groothuis. Lucas Georgiou, Fin Diffey and Max Locke stroke, coxed by Ruby Read, who suffered from an equipment failure but rowed well to finish 4th in their final. Next was the club’s young Ladies Novice single sculler Lottie Pettitt, who unfortunately caught a rogue wave at the turn, causing her to capsize. However, she did well to get back into her scull and finish the race finishing in 4th place. The Club Coastal Junior Sculler Ben Sanderson then raced in the Coastal Junior Single Sculls, finishing 6th in his final. Newly promoted, following their win at Coalporters Regatta the previous Saturday, the Ryde Ladies Coastal Junior Coxed Four of Maggie Sanderson, Alexis Owen, Emily Kellerman and Mai Read stroking, with Ruby Read coxing, raced really well to finish 4th in the heat in their first race at this status. The Men’s Coastal Junior Pair of Isaac Gibson and Joe Roberts stroking achieved the Clubs best result of the day, finishing 2nd in their final. In the Men’s Novice Fours final, the young Ryde crew of Lucas Georgiou, Yogi Ashworth, Fin Diffey, Ben Robotham, stroke and Lottie Pettitt coxing will be slightly disappointed with their 4th place in the final. The Ryde Club had 2 Novice Single Scullers racing, with Paddy Kearney finishing in 3rd place and Lars Groothuis finishing in 5th in their Final. In the Men’s Senior Pairs, the Ryde pair of Paddy Kearney and Will Hall finished in 5th place in their final. The final event of the day was a non-status coxed fours mixed race, where the Ryde Club entered 1 crew, consisting of Lottie Pettitt, Joe Roberts, Isaac Gibson, Max Lock, with Paddy Kearney coxing, who finished 7th, and a Composite Four with Poole with mother and son Maggie and Ben Sanderson, combining with 2 members of Poole Rowing Club, coxed by Mia Read of Ryde, who finished in 9th place.
