The Shanklin Cliff Lift has suffered yet another power failure today (Saturday) and is due to remain out of service into Sunday.
2 people had to be rescued from the lift by firefighters from Sandown and Shanklin earlier this evening – the second time in the past week. As previously reported by Island Echo, 3 people had to be rescued by firefighters from the same lift as a result of a previous power failure.
It is currently unclear at this stage as to when the electrical fault will be rectified.
The Isle of Wight Council has apologised for the inconvenience and will update through their social media channels as and when an update is available.
A spokesperson for the Council said:
“Following a loss of power at Shanklin Lift (Saturday 7 September) the lift remains out of service on Sunday 8 September.
“Apologises for any inconvenience.
“We will issue an update when more is known.”
The previous power failure was repaired on Wednesday, although it appears another fault has arisen.
UPDATE MONDAY – The Shanklin Cliff Lift is now back in action, the Council have confirmed.

How much did the lift refurbishment cost???
For weeks now only one of the two lifts has been used anyway so is one side permanently broken down?
Or have the clowns perhaps reassigned one of the motors to the floaty bridge?
Party and brewery come to mind.
And of course right now Osborne Steps are also closed.
What must visitors think of this island??
These failures are surprising coming so soon after the recent major refurbishment.
Hopefully this time they won’t ignore any warnings and then suddenly discover that it needs to be taken out of action for several months right at the start of the season.
When I go every August only one of the lifts in in operation and tbh has been like that for a long time. Maybe its time to strip down the whole thing rebuild it with new updated motorcars and why are Osborne steps that means the only way is down Hope Hill or down the side of the chine
Come on Islandecho, you’re doing a great job with local news but let’s have an up-to-date picture of the lift, please.
Another council big job council on the island are a joke
The council and island roads are like Laurel and Hardy
I heard there is a dispute over the lift that is out of action (for ever) with the Council and the lift supplier. Court action apparently. May be wrong worth checking the story out
