Investigations into a serious road traffic collision involving a van, which occurred on the main road at Ningwood overnight, are continuing this morning (Saturday).
The main road between Newport and Yarmouth has been closed from Station Road to Hill Place Lane as collision investigators from the mainland forensically examine the crash scene.
Emergency services were called to the incident at around 01:45 this morning with a hard road closure almost immediately put in place, indicating the severity of the situation.
Police have worked through the night to piece together the events of the early hours and their efforts continue – more than 6 hours after the crash occurred.
Motorists heading to the Yarmouth ferry and to the West Wight should allow extra time, with road closures on Station Road and Elm Lane resulting in a lengthy diversion.
Southern Vectis buses are on diversion.
UPDATE @ 11:14 – The road has now reopened in both directions.
Route 7 buses can serve Gunville, Shalfleet and Cranmore once again.
UPDATE @ 11:57 – It has been confirmed that a man in his 40s has died as a result of a single vehicle collision.
