Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely is urging West Wight residents to take up the offer of a free slow-drain water butt as part of a campaign to clean up the environment and reduce storm overflows. Letters are currently being distributed to residents in Freshwater, Totland, and Yarmouth. So far, slow-drain water butts have been installed in gardens in Cowes, East Cowes, Fishbourne, Gurnard, Northwood and Wootton. Now, they will be offered to everyone with properties connected to the combined sewer system in Freshwater, Totland and Yarmouth. Engineers from Southern Water will knock on doors to offer a free butt and free installation. No visiting engineer will ask for money. They will also have ID. The idea behind the slow-drain water butts is to collect and hold stormwater for a period before releasing it gradually. This slows the flow of water into the sewer system during a storm and helps to reduce damaging storm overflows. In his letter he said:
“Working with others on the Island, we’ve persuaded Southern Water to make the Isle of Wight an example of national best practice for cleaning up the water environment. “In total, the firm has allocated £230 million to the Island’s sewage network. Many of the schemes that will roll-out across the country will be trialled here first. We will see improvements first. “We know that water butts are effective at reducing storm overflows. In 2022, a trial was conducted of slow-drain water butts in Havenstreet. After 2/3 of eligible residents accepted the butt, ‘spills’ from Havenstreet pumping station declined by 70%”
Mr Seely said:
“If you’re a resident in the Freshwater, Totland and Yarmouth area and you are offered a free slow-drain water butt, please say yes. This is an opportunity for all of us to play our part and help reduce storm overflows into rivers and seas around the Island. “The water butts are just one part of a plan that includes installing planters, redesigning road drainage, replumbing parts of the system as well as improving pumping stations across the Island. “It’s all thanks to the Government’s 2021 Environment Act and Storm Overflows Discharge Reduction Plan mandate that water companies must end the ecological harm caused by storm overflows.”
Southern Water will be holding a drop-in session for residents to answer questions and update on progress on Tuesday 19th March at the Isle of Wight Community Club in Cowes from 18:00 – 20:00.

Should be rolled out islandwide
All we get for our £2,000.00 a year Council Tax is a once a week
Bin collection.
What tripe. You get more than just your bin emptied. You pay for all the SEN children to be able to be taken by taxi to the choosing of whatever school they wish to disrupt.
Your money goes on funding homes of multiple occupancy for all those who have chosen to take drugs and are now hooked on them so won’t work, but need expensive care and fully heated homes to doss around and abuse.
Your money funds all those alleged ‘single muvers’ who never ‘sleep alone’ but claim single muver payments which are greater and then doss on the beach all Summer, and on facebook to equally chavy, muvvers, all Winter or in the nail bar, or gluing on lashes to their orange fake tan pouting faces.
Of course, some of your Council.Tax is wasted!
How dare you, you vile human. Stand outside St Georges and repeat that I dare you. Or Medina house. Or repeat that to any mother whose spouse left them destitute when he followed his dick and ran off with someone else. Our council tax was, in fact wasted on your education and that I bitterly resent. It does also pay for swimming pools, libraries, care for the elderly, coastal erosion schemes and many more things. If you are genuinely concerned with wastage I suggest you look a little closer at things like government contracts and jobs for the boys. THAT’S where your money actually goes.
Me thinks thou does protest too much.
Perhaps you ‘man’ left, not to follow his privates, but to escape a vile, PC, overbearing, critical, miserable crab, who instead of enjoying life, and the differences of opinions of others, would prefer free speech to be allowed, but ONLY if it coincides with your narrative.
He, had a very lucky escape, so keep spending the tax credits and enjoy the free rent, and any extras for the SEN’s.
Actually I’m male, a business owner and academic. Next?
You’re also a twat.
Hang on a second, let’s just look objectively at some of your points.
Just had my £3000 council tax bill of which I get no relief or benefits. I’ve paid into the system since I was 15 years old and my first job.
1) Our council tax was, in fact wasted on your education and that I bitterly resent.
My education was taken way before council tax and enabled me to pay into the system from my first job at 15 years old
2) it does also pay for swimming pools,
Never use them
3) libraries
No, I use Kindle and free books
4) Care for the elderly
I quite expect to pay for all of my elderly care even down to selling my house if need be
5) coastal erosion schemes
Many of my local walks are closed owing to landslips
I have noticed that my books only get “sold” for Kindle when I promote them free
Oh do shut-up. Gerrard is 100% correct in EVERTHING hes written
Well said ! Unfortunately these inbreds will continue to spout their hate speech on here… cos they are all brainwashed numptys with nothing better to do ! .
Gerrard the sad thing is you are 110% correct
We pay for all the lazy good for nothing Bums, many of which
are driving around in Free vehicles us workers cannot afford to buy.
They pay Fcuk all Council Tax and get over a few hundred quid a week
The system in Britain is broken and beyond repair!
Have you read the rules for Council tax?
Your education failed you in maths then?
And a load of potholes
As the time approaches to say farewell to our hard-working MP Bob Seely, it is great to know that he will be forever remembered every time we see his butt. Seely’s butt will always be a reminder of Bob’s contribution to island life. So I implore everyone who has the chance to say yes to Bob’s butt. Welcome Bob Seely’s butt into your life with open arms.
Big but = too many sausages I guess.
I think the majority of us only know him for his sausage eating antics during lockdown. I’ve not heard of any other impact he’s had on our island.
What about shanklin?
What about us 2nd homeowners in Seaview
We pay full annual Council tax and we are only on the
Island for 6-8 weeks of the year.
We deserve more.
Get knotted council tax doubled for all dfl …..
Your choice, ……
No contribution to island life….
What about Chalet owners at Sandown Bay Holiday Centre
Yaverland, we pay full Council Tax, but are only allowed to stay in our
chalets for 44 weeks of the year.
Therefore we should only be paying 44 weeks council tax.
not 52 weeks!
Can i urge seeley to be flushed!
Seconded! Well said
West Wight residents to say “No” to Seely. Time’s up Bob, the countdown has begun.
Too late sponge Bob, you can’t vote for sw to dump sewage in the rivers and sea 2 years ago to appease shareholders, and now its election time offer this . Your a joke , and you don’t deserve your payrise
Are these butts deep enough to drown, say, an MP?
More plastic and I bet non of these water butts are made from recycled plastic
Dear ol’ Bob Squealy, vote to create the problem in the first place then trumpet the solution as if it were your idea….but only because you know there’s a profit to be had from the parent company of…Southern Water. Macquaries shares anyone? Chin chin! (or should that be ching ching?)
Anybody would think there’s an Election coming up !
The results will probably be rigged.
Go back under your rock lazy teapot
As if you really care.
We ALL know why you keep popping up on pointless posts dont we!!
Unfortunately the pictured water butt has been removed as the residents were wading through water when the butt constantly overflowed.Certainly a good advert for Southern Water.
A serious point here ~ what happens when every butt is full when it rains for a couple of days.?
Shirley it would then act like a normal drainpipe with the rain going straight into the sewers.?
This would render it useless
The butts are slow release so they are never full. That is the point.
Am I missing something here? Why are there so many (mostly rather silly, to be honest) comments about Council Tax when the issue being discussed is about water and concerns Southern Water (a private company) and not the local authority? If the butts are provided by Southern Water, those paying Water charges may have a egitimate interest but it is nothing to do with Council Tax.
Apparently if you inform southern water that you have a water butt you will get a reduction in your water bills…
What’s the point have had the sign in my window since last summer !!!
I had a similar sign in my window too saying that I felt I wanted a slow seepage butt.
All I received was a tube of out of date pile cream, aptly named’ Anusole’ left by some old lady, and a couple of notes asking to meet me in Steyne Park men’s WC after dark.
Think I will take it down soon.
Live in Binstead and still waiting for a waterbutt to be installed.
